  1. Act 1

  2. INT. BEDROOM - 08:30

  3. The room is filled with soft, grey morning light. A digital clock on the beside table tells the time. PETER blinks and looks at the clock.

  4. PETER (V.O.): Eight-thirty!

  5. A slow geniune smile spreads across his face.

  6. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I went to bed at 00:30. Eight hours. A full night.

  7. He stretches his arms above his head.

  8. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The body knows what it needs. I like to believe that the world can pause for eight hours for me to catch up.

  9. Pausing.

  10. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): At 0:30, I closed my eyes on one set of worries. At 8:30, I opened them to a different world.

  11. Peter swings his legs out of bed, the motion easy and pleased.

  12. Act 2

  13. INT. LIVING ROOM - 10:30

  14. Sitting on a sofa, Peter gets a WhatsApp message.

  15. PETER (V.O.): It's from my elder daughter.

  16. Peter reads the message a few times:..Offer...

  17. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Great She got it. After the final round in Seoul just yesterday...

  18. He smiles broadly and types his response enthusiastically.

  19. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A week ago, she came home immediately after quiting a job that was making her miserable.

  20. Later, Peter is on his iPad Mini, taping away diligently. The cheerful PING of a correct answer on Duolingo. He's doing his Spanish lesson.

  21. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I've learned that joy doesn't have to be announced. It can be quietly in my chest while I do my Duolingo and no one has to know.

  22. After finishing the last lesson, he moves to the piano in the corner and begins to play a simple, cheerful piece.

  23. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My playing may not be perfect, but it's the progress that truly matters.

  24. INT. SWIMMING POOL - 15:00

  25. Peter emerges from the pool entrance, his hair still damp. He's carrying a small swim bag.

  26. PETER (V.O.): I'm invigorated.

  27. Pausing.

  28. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Where should I go for afternoon tea to celebrate this wonderful day?

  29. He strolls towards the MTR station.

  30. INT. LUCKY CHA CHAAN TENG - 15:30

  31. Peter walks into an unmarked place. He sits at a corner table. He orders from the PROPRIETOR.

  32. PETER: 乾炒牛河 and a cup of Ovaltine please.

  33. Moments later, a plate of noodles nicely seared, darkened by soy, with slices of beef and bean sprouts is placed before him.

  34. PETER (V.O.): Happiness, properly wok-fried, doesn't arrive slowly. It arrives all at once

  35. Peter takes a bite. He chews it.

  36. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The cooking is good and the flavours are delicious; however, I find the sliced beef to be less tender than I expected.

  37. He takes more bites.

  38. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The Cantonese understand something profound: that the ordinary, done extraordinarily well, becomes sacred. 乾炒牛河 is their proof.

  39. Pausing.

  40. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The smell of soy and garlic on a hot wok doesn't just feed me - it reminds me who I'm and where I come from.

  41. Pausing.

  42. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The best meals aren't the ones I plan. They're the ones I stumble into with an empty stomach and open mind.

  43. Peter finishes his 乾炒牛河.

  44. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Content is a clean plate and a quiet afternoon.

  45. Pausing.

  46. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A great 乾炒牛河 is about wok hei - the breath of the wok. The same is true of a great life: I need that elusive, untranslatable fire that passes through me and leaves everything changed.

  47. Pausing.

  48. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Age gives me two gifts: the patience to wait for good news and the wisdom to recognize it when it arrives.

  49. Peter approaches the cashier and pays with cash.

  50.

  51. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When I'm gone, I hope my children remember that their father woke up every day and tried to earn his own happiness so he'd have room for theirs.

  52. Act 3

  53. INT. LIVING ROOM - 21:45

  54. Peter uploads a photo of a plate of stir-fried noodle dish accompanied by a cup and chopsticks

, set on a wooden table to a draft on his laptop.

  55. PETER (V.O.): Luck isn't lightning. It's slow and quiet - a job offer, a plate of delicious noodles - arriving so close together I almost miss the pattern.

  56. Thinking.

  57. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): We call it luck because we can't explain it. But may be it's just life catching up with all the good you've put into it.

  58. Reflecting.

  59. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Some days I plan. Other days I just live. Today, I lived - from 0:30 to 8:30 to a plate of 乾炒牛河 in Cha Chaan Teng called Lucky. If that's not enough, I don't know what is.

  60. The END
