張 and 张

Updated: Jun 30, 2021

  1. FADE IN.

  2. Act 1

  3. INT. STUDY - DAY

  4. Taking a printed paper from a printer, PETER reads it.

  5. PETER (V.O.): My younger daughter's cv looks pretty impressive. My wife has asked me to print it with my better printer.

  6. Pausing.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Her cv is perfect for native English speakers.

  8. Pausing.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But for Hongkongers, they might think her given name is her surname.

  10. Pausing.

  11. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Adding her Chinese name will prevent the issue from arising.

  12. Pausing.

  13. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Yes, let me do that for her.

  14. Act 2

  15. INT. STUDY -CONTINUOUS

  16. After writing the Chinese character 張 on a laptop screen, Peter sees the simplified Chinese character 张 as the option for Peter to confirm.

  17. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Yes. I preferred that.

  18. Recalling.

  19. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): For a few years now, I've been issuing domain-name dispute decisions in English or Chinese.

  20. Pausing.

  21. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): For my decisions in Chinese, they've to be in simplified Chinese characters.

  22. Pausing.

  23. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): As I wasn't trained to write simplified Chinese characters, I recall I set the input method in such a way that I'd write in the traditional way but would get the equivalent simplified Chinese character.

  24. Pausing.

  25. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But I've forgotten how I did it.

  26. Peter adds two simplified Chinese characters into the soft copy of his younger daughter's cv.

  27. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd):It looks better, but...

  28. Pausing.

  29. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd):Hongkongers might think that my younger daughter might originate from the Mainland...

  30. Pausing.

  31. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): That might cause another unnecessary issue. Using traditional Chinese characters would prevent the issue from arising.

  32. Thinking.

  33. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In my other newer laptop, whenever I write in Chinese, its simplified Chinese character software will generate Chinese characters including the traditional 張 character for me to choose.

  34. Thinking.

  35. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It has been a mystery to me. Now is the time to solve it!

  36. SEQUENCE OF PETER'S ATTEMPT TO SOLVE THE HANDWRITTEN CHINESE INPUT MYSTERY

  37. A. Checking the language setting of his newer laptop, Peter takes a photo of it.

  38. B. Having compared with the language setting between his older laptop and the photo, Peter puts his hand in cheek.

  39. C. Peter sees the same label "Chinese (Simplified, China) Microsoft Wubi" in his older laptop and in the image.

  40. D. Peter then resets the Chinese language preference of his older laptop.

  41. E. Seeing the option of inputting simplified Chinese to get traditional ones, Peter looks enlightened. He selects it.

  42. F. Going back to a window, Peter writes his stylised 張 on the screen and the options of both 張 and 张 appear.

  43. RETURN TO PRESENT

  44. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The software is smart. I thought I was writing the traditional Chinese character 張, but it recognised that as the simplified character 张 and let me have the options of both 張 and 张 to choose.

  45. Peter quickly adds the Chinese name of his younger daughter into the soft copy of her cv.

  46. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My younger daughter will need it shortly.

  47. Soon after Peter has printed a few copies of the cv, his YOUNGER DAUGHTER appears.

  48. PETER: I've added your Chinese name against your English one. There shouldn't be any confusion between your surname and your given name.

  49. Peter's younger daughter checks and accepts them.

  50. PETER: Oh, I've to rush to Court in the afternoon to take a verdict...

  51. Checking the time, Peter quickly packs his brief case.

  52. Act 3

  53. INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT

  54. Peter, his WIFE and younger daughter are chatting over dinner as their family PET is listening and opening her mouth wide.

  55. PETER: Look at our darling pet... She's so happy.

  56. YOUNGER DAUGHTER: Today's interview went very well...

  57. Peter and his wife smile from their hearts.

  58. INT. STUDY - NIGHT

  59. PETER (V.O.): But for my concern about 張 and 张 regarding my younger daughter's cv, I don't know when I'd solve my mystery.

  60. Pausing.

  61. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): More importantly, I feel happy for the little thing that I've done for my younger daughter.

  62. FADE OUT.

  63. THE END
