Raw & Real

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

In Spring 2017, I was invited to deliver lectures at Beijing University from end May. Apart from engaging intellectual property students at postgraduate and doctorate levels, I would also be sharing my perspectives with undergraduates on arts and law. My goal in any knowledge transfer has been to inspire my audience, liberating their potential and qualities to achieve.

I engaged in intensive intellectual activities to prepare and develop my original messages. What was challenging to me, however, was the preparation of bi-lingual powerpoints slides and the summaries of my talks. I wanted them to be exciting and delightful but could find room for improvement again and again.

I therefore made May 25 as the deadline for me to submit my audio-visual presentation aids to the lecture co-ordinator. But when the date came, I could still find room for improvement of my stuff. Then it dawned upon me that I was actually letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.

As I did further research on the visual art scene trend, I discovered that the move towards raw or unfiltered in documentary aesthetics could be a trend. That in fact has been my non-glossy creativity style in my original literary, dramatic and musical works. As I believe the subject matter of raw and real could be even stronger than glossy and artificial, I sent my stuff without further hesitation!
