BREXIT

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

How relevant is BREXIT to you? To me, BREXIT from Hong Kong happened on July 1, 1997. And Hong Kong has not changed for over 20 years.

Major British legacy in Hong Kong include the rule of law, the use of English as a second language and the Hong Kong brand. The challenge for Hong Kong to move with the times has become tougher in light of regional competition. Would Hongkongers ride on the Greater Bay Area platform to explore and exploit business opportunities along the Belt and Road?

Having accomplished the mission to design and build Hong Kong's intellectual property system before BREXIT from Hong Kong, I maintained and sustained the system until my retirement in 2015. After completion of my garden leave, I have taken steps to appraise collaborative opportunities in Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Kuala Lumpur. I believe Hongkongers should take the initiative to change in the right direction.

BREXIT from the European Union on March 29, 2019 would definitely pose challenges to Britain on civil, political, economic, social and cultural fronts. My assessment is that Britain' s European and domestic relationships are quite irrelevant to Hong Kong, China. I believe Hongkongers should act timely to leverage capacity and support in the Greater Bay Area and along the maritime Silk Road to make Hong Kong, China - a new world value centre!
