Yesterday evening, I attended a feature film premiere at a theater as one of the invited guests. The 121-minute fictional story with a mixed genres of drama blended with romance, casting students and professors, was the result of a collaborative effort. I envied their successful production as I shared the same value, but lacked the capacity and support to make a feature film myself.
Following the Hollywood blockbuster format, I have written a feature screenplay. I have learned a lot in the screenwriting process (eg using subtexts is more powerful than telling the messages in dialogues or narratives) and dream to direct and produce it one day. What I can do meanwhile is to create and produce original short music-videos all by myself and issue them to the public via the internet.
While any creative process is enjoyable to the creators themselves, the creative medium often means to disseminate a theme to the audience apart from appealing to their sensuous pleasure. Once a feature film is watched and the drama consumed, few would watch it again, except those who continue to love it. Leaving the audience with a relevant, compelling and resonating message is the key.
Most of the guests at the premiere showed great support by sitting tight until the end. What followed was the experience sharing among the leading players. When no audience seemed anxious to interact, I broke the ice by remarking on the forgotten parts ie good photography, nice musical arrangement and impressive performance of a supporting actor sitting just next to me!
