Comradeship

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

During 1986-1987, a just retired emeritus professor of Air & Space Law was teaching an evening class at University College London. I seized the opportunity to follow his lectures so that I could learn from the master. A classmate from Hong Kong due to work commitment often came in late and asked me to record the lectured parts he had missed.

During the 2000s, a subordinate colleague of mine wanted to take urgent long leaves to reunite with her dying sister in the United States. Her immediate supervisor was not supportive on ground of operational need, and she appealed to me. I gave sympathetic considerations of her request; and she has been very supportive of me ever since.

As an old junior barrister now, I am relearning and updating my knowledge and practice on the job. My Air & Space Law classmate, now an established Solicitor in Hong Kong, was the first to let me have the opportunity and offered me the highest fee although I suggested free support. Comradeship is still in us after so many years.

On my way to the High Court today, I bumped into my former subordinate colleague, who is now a High Court Master. I greeted her by saying: "I'm doing a small matter that I've never done before." She smilingly responded: "I'd like to watch how you submit..." - her joking but supportive remarks brought me joy and brightened my day!
