Colour A Life

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

FADE IN:

EXT. STREET - NIGHT

PETER in casual wear, carrying a bag.

PETER (V.O.)

I only have time to go swimming

the evening session today. I'm

flying out tomorrow morning and

haven't packed yet. Have I got

Japanese yen?

INT. ATM - NIGHT

Empty. Peter is before a foreign currency one. He withdraws a pile of notes.

PETER (V.O.)

I got cash...Oh I haven't got a

Japanese sim card.

EXT. STREET-MALL - NIGHT

Checking his watch, Peter rushes inside.

EXT. BUS STOP - BEFORE DAY BREAK

Peter waits.

PETER (V.O.)

I deserve a break. Life's so

hectic for me for the past

couple of days.

INT. HANEDA AIRPORT - NIGHT

Peter relaxes on a seat near a gate.

PETER (V.O.)

Got my first experience travelling

from Narita to Haneda - the first

one getting out of the plane at

Narita, and the first one to pass

through the immigration as I

didn't have any check-in baggage.

The 70km bus ride was smooth too.

Peter checks a mail. We see on the phone screen "drama...Recent Posts...share your colourful life..." Peter is in thoughts.

PETER (V.O.)

How to colour a life? Personality?

Lifestyle? Contrasts? Thoughts?

Influence? Uniqueness?

Peter types.

EXT. PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY - DAY

Blue sky above Nagasaki's Spectacles Bridge. Tourists dot over and under it, loitering by the embankment or kayaking in the stream. Peter observes the busy but peaceful environment.

PETER (V.O.)

I didn't know about the stone

bridge until it featured in my

hotel bookings. That's not my

main purpose of coming to

Nagasaki...

Tourists hurriedly take selfies before returning to their coaches parked nearby.

PETER (V.O.)

Couldn't quite recall why did

I choose to come in late Nov...

Anyway, I must visit all spots

relating to the atomic bombing

of Nagasaki.

EXT. PEACE PARK - DAY

Peter gets off from a tram and walks a little. He and we see the "Peace Park" sign across a road. Beside a stack of escalators is a stairway separated by a stairway of colourful little flowers. Peter walks cross and up.

The Park is dotted with small and big sculptures. Peter examines them.

PETER (V.O.)

Some are local and some are

foreign. Presentations differ,

but the theme is the same-

peace.

Pausing.

PETER (Cont'd) (V.O.)

Didn't know until now that

around 10,000 Koreans and Chinese working here and prisoners of war

imprisoned here were killed by the

Nagasaki atomic bombing on

August 9, 1945.

Another pause.

PETER (Cont'd) (V.O.)

It must be hell on earth then.

Hope that's the second and last

time...

Tourists take the same route to exit. Peter makes a detour and descends via a parkside path.

EXT. PARKSIDE PATH - DAY

Colourful autumn leaves by a gentle slope under the sun. Nobody, except Peter is there. He enjoys the sight.

PETER (V.O.)

Oh yes! I meant to see Autumn

colours in Nagasaki. I had no

clue where I can see them. Well,

they're now before my eyes!

Peter captures photos and videos from different perspectives.

A beat.

Looking very pleased, he rejoins other tourists at the main exit.

INT - HONG KONG CLUB - NIGHT

A dinner reception. Peter sits at a round table. Photo sessions.

Peter chats with LADY #1, #2 and #3 and a GENTLEMAN on his left.

GENTLEMAN

Sounds that you're quite

busy.

PETER

Yes! But I wouldn't let

my work schedule interrupt

with my monthly holidays...

They all stare at Peter.

GENTLEMAN

How long are your trips?

Including one-day trip to

Shenzhen?

PETER

Yes, if my schedules are

tight. But I have just had

a 5-day trip in Nagasaki.

LADY# 4 sits next to Peter on his right.

LADY#4

Do you mean you travel a

dozen times in a year?

PETER

At least once a month.

Sometimes more than one

trip in a month.

LADY#4

And you travel alone?

PETER

Most of the time. I've got

used to it. I like to bring out

my inner life...

Lady #4 and Peter continues the chatting rather than the eating.

LADY#4

...put your heart into your

and others' smallest acts,

irrespective of their stature

in life...

PETER (V.O.)

She's young but her life is

already rich in colours.

Other guests leave as they continues the exchange. Then, Peter gives Lady #4 his name card and she hers. Lady #4 looks at Peter's name card.

PETER

I cut my name cards myself.

LADY #4

I can feel your heart in making

it.

PETER

(Nodding)

That's precisely the personal

touch I wish to pass on, but

few can feel that.

LADY #4

Let's keep in touch then.

Peter thanks the waiting staff as he leaves.

INT. TRAIN CAR - NIGHT

Holding a name card, Peter types a mail.

INT. STUDY - NIGHT

Peter works on his computer, expanding his blog post.

PETER (V.O.)

Everyone has his/her way to

"colour" a life. It's however

hard to visualize a colourful

life though.

Pausing.

PETER (Cont'd) (V.O.)

If colour is the finishing touch

on everything, I'd colour my

my life with Autumn colours.

Having checked the featured photo of his blog post, Peter looks pleased.

FADE OUT. The End
