FADE IN:
INT. HKIAC CONFERENCE ROOM - NIGHT
Panel and audience. PETER sits in the middle of the panel. He looks at ease with the format. The MC speaks.
MC
... We've Peter Cheung as our
Panel moderator.., he will
introduce the other panelists.
PETER (V.O.)
Why I'm moderating here?
FLASHBACK
INT. CLASSROOM - DAY
Students (20s) in two groups. Four sit before a panel that Peter chairs, a GENTLEMAN (40s) and a lady (30s) sitting by his side. The other four are at the back.
The gentleman speaks in a parental fashion to the group at the front. We see students' uneasy faces. Peter presses his lips tight before the gentleman stops.
PETER (Cont'd) (V.O.)
Before I ask our lady panelist to
comment on the team's presentation,
I should like to remark that we try
to be constructively critical. So
don't take it too hard.
We see the faces of the students easing a little.
END FLASHBACK
A wall clock registers a few minutes before seven.
PETER
It's not yet 7 o'clock... I used
to entertain the early birds
by singing them a song. But
I haven't brought my guitar
tonight.
The audience look up smiling.
PETER (V.O.)
I just want to make all
comfortable.
As the clock registers seven, Peter continues speaking.
PETER (V.O.)
I've already set the scene by
sharing my little story about
tonight's talk. Let me
introduce the first speaker
by telling another story as to
how I got connected with him.
Peter and GENTLEMAN# 1 engages with each other briefly but very friendly. The audience seem engaged too.
FLASHBACK
INT. RESTAURANT - DAY
Seven to eight ladies and gentlemen are at a long table, chatting. Peter talks to GENTLEMEN#1, #2 and #3 and a LADY (The PANEL) in turn. We hear and see gestures, "You speak first, and then you, you and you."
PETER
I should like the Panel to talk
about the background, the
challenges and the resolutions-
just like telling a story.
The Panel hesitates.
PETER
Just share your experience and
insight in an interesting way to
captivate the audience.
The Panel nods.
END FLASHBACK
PETER (Cont'd) (V.O.)
My panelist are professionals.
They'd speak within the time
limit.
GENTLEMAN#1 has his watch put on the table.
GENTLEMAN#1
... As to the principles...
(Looking at the watch)
I think I've used up my allotted
time.
PETER
One more minute.
GENTLEMAN#1 presses on.
I've set the context and driven
the discussion.
GENTLEMAN#2 waits to speak.
PETER (V.O.)
He is a prolific writer. I like his
historical perspective. Let me
highlight it.
A beat.
PETER
...if you want to learn what is
gunboat justice, you've to read
volumes of his work...
GENTLEMAN#2 stares at Peter.
A beat.
GENTLEMAN#3 waits to speak.
PETER (V.O.)
He's well-known but very humble.
His passion in learning, and his
contribution to Hong Kong have
to be publicly admired and
recognized.
GENTLEMAN#3 begins to open his mouth. Peter quickly intervenes.
PETER
Our next speaker needs some
introductions...
GENTLEMAN#3 looks surprised.
PETER
He has two PhDs...He's the good
God Father of ODR in Hong Kong
..not just the mastermind, but also
the initiator...
GENTLEMAN#3's face reddens a little. He speaks.
A beat.
A LADY waits to speak.
PETER (V.O.)
I was surprised that she's leaving
office soon. She organized this
talk!
PETER
...she impresses me as a very
effective and efficient
administrator...let's hear the
challenges she's facing...
LADY
I'd follow Peter's instructions to talk about firstly the context,
then the challenges and lastly
the resolutions...
The lady finishes speaking.
PETER (V.O.)
I must now let the Panelists
engage with each other.
Peter speaks and then the Panel interact among them.
PETER (V.O.)
Time is running out. I must
let the audience interact.
Peter opens questions from the floor. QUESTIONERS#1,#2 and #3 speak and replies from the Panel.
PETER (V.O.)
The last one is relevant and
compelling.
PETER
(with gestures)
Thank you. I'd invite not just the
Panel but also the audience to
think about what we can do to
make Hong Kong great again
All minds in focus.
PETER (V.O.)
(Smiling)
I believe the goal of the talk has been achieved.
Talk ends. Handshakes. Photo sessions.
INT. TRAIN CAR - NIGHT
Peter types a Thank-You email.
PETER (V.O.)
I'm a fast thinker and a fast
actor too.
INT. STUDY - NIGHT
