Senior Junior

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

FADE IN:

INT. CHAMBERS - NIGHT

A plaque of names displayed outside. Near the top of the plaque is a relatively new name plate. Peter looks at it before

entering.

PETER (V.O.)

I am a senior in IP but a

junior in general practice.

A beat.

Reading a thick book, PETER looks tired. A SECRETARY (40s) approaches.

SECRETARY

Mr Cheung, you're the only

one here. I'm off now.

Peter nods but carries on reading. He finds something.

PETER (V.O.)

(Pleased)

This bit of legal information

should strengthen my

argument. I'm glad that my

effort pays off!

INT. SLEEPING ROOM - NIGHT

Peter wakes up in bed. He checks his phone time: 05:45.

PETER (V.O.)

I was so tired yesterday

night that I didn't have

any problem going to

sleep. My biological

clock wakes me up.

My mind keeps focusing

on my legal arguments.

He gets out of bed.

INT. STUDY - DAY

Books, files and papers everywhere. Peter tries to move some of them. The scene is still chaotic.

PETER (V.O.)

I've become forgetful. I've

to check if I've mislaid

anything. At the same time,

I'm refining my legal

argument. I'm serious about

everything I do.

FLASHBACK

INT. ATTORNEY GENERAL'S CHAMBERS - DAY (1985)

Peter (31) is pushing a cart of LAW REPORTS into an office. A LAWYER (40s) sitting inside looks at Peter with surprised eyes.

PETER

I've prepared a draft

legal opinion for you

to consider. The case

authorities are flagged

in the law reports.

INT. LAW LIBRARY - DAY (1991)

Peter stares at the LAW BOOKS in the bookshelves.

PETER (V.O.)

I'm leaving the Attorney

General Chambers for

good. What I'll miss is

this big law library - it's

a treasure trove to me.

END FLASHBACK

INT - COURT ROOM - DAY

Papers at the Bar and on the Bench. Peter addresses the JUDGE.

PETER

...No weight should be

given to the Defendant's

exculpatory statement...

HKSAR v Chung Ka Wai...

Defence has the evidential

burden to prove the

Defednant has "lawful

authority or reasonable

excuse"...

The judge takes notice.

JUDGE

But I need to draw an

irresistible inference that

there's no reasonable

doubt...

PETER

...I just exercise my best

endeavour to assist the

court. The Defendant is

entitled to the benefit of

the doubt.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Peter thinks and writes. .

PETER (V.O.)

Reflecting on the newly

acquired experience and

writing down the details

in the reporting context,

actually reinforce my

knowledge, experience

and skills.

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd)

As a senior junior, I see

not just the general

practice and procedures,

but also the roles of

different actors in the

justice system and the

kind of societal impact

they're making.

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) Cont'd)

When I was a junior in

every way, I tried to

make a difference to

advance my career. I

only thought about

myself ....
