A Sense Of Purpose

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

FADE IN:

.

EXT. ROADS - DAY

A wet-hair look Peter walks along roads, not perceiving objects around him.

PETER (V.O.)

What should be my talking

points in the April sharing

session? How should I

summarize the outcomes

of my four decades of work?

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

Let me begin from the

beginning. In the 80s, I equipped

myself. I learned in universities,

from peers, and on the job. I'm

indebted to all those who

supported me!

Pausing.

PETER (V.O,) (Cont'd)

In the 90s, I captured and delivered

public value. I designed Hong

Kong's intellectual property system.

I thank all those who contributed

in the processes!

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

In the noughties, I contributed

in WTO dispute settlement. As

a Panelist, I resolved international

disputes. I thank the international

IP community for recognizing

Hong Kong's IP contribution!

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

In the 2010s, my vision was

to deploy the concept of

IP Trading to drive other

professional services

developments. I still need

success stories to tell. I

thank all those who assumed

the risks in the disruptive

process!

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

Why I did all that? Having

equipped myself, I happened

to get the missions to accomplish.

I should say I derived job

satisfaction, feeling a sense

of purpose.

Peter arrives home.

INT. NICHOLIINI'S - DAY

A luncheon of three. GENTLEMAN#1 (late 60s) chats happily with GENTLEMAN#2 (early 60s), as Peter looks on.

PETER (V.O.)

It's very nice that I'm

included in this friendly

gathering.

FLASHBACK & MONTAGE

A/ INT. EAGLE'S NEST - DAY (1989)

Gentleman#1 (late 30s) and Peter (early 30s) discuss over a meal.

GENTLEMAN#1

Basically, IP is about

unfair competition.

Peter nods.

PETER (V.O.)

That's insightful! He

has been generous

in sharing his knowledge.

B/ INT. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL CHAMBERS - DAY (1996)

Holding a document, Gentleman#2 (early 40s) argues with Peter (early 40s) in the presence of a secretariat STAFF (50s).

GENTLEMAN#2

(Earnestly)

These are counsel's

legal opinions!

STAFF

(Solemnly)

Have you considered

them?

PETER

Yes, but we aren't

talking about the

law as it is - but the

legal policy - the law

to-be. That's my

remit.

RETURN TO PRESENT

GENTLEMAN#1

...the performers took to

the streets in call to protect

their rights...

PETER

A celebrity openly remarked

that he'd immigrate if

Hong Kong didn't regulate

parallel imports...

PETER (Cont'd)

(To Gentleman#2)

You're pretty active then.

Gentleman#2 smiles slightly.

INT. STUDY - NIGHT

PETER (V.O.)

Those were some of the

highlights in the 90s...

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

As to my highlights in the

noughties, only those

involved in the dispute

settlement process would

know. It's hard for others

to appreciate out of

context. It's WTO stuff

though.

Pausing.

PETER(V.O.)(Cont'd)

As to my vision in the 2010s,

more can be done now,

given the Greater Bay

Outline Development Plan.

I look forward to working

with like-minded people

on securitization and

tokenization of IP!

Pausing.

PETER(V.O.)(Cont'd)

Let all these be my talking

points, and see if they can

lead to a sense of purpose

for all!
