FADE IN:
INT. STUDY - DAY
Phone notification. PETER opens a video clip. He sees a BUSKER (30s) with a stylish hair style, rag outfits and other installations including a QR code on a tent card, singing a Mandarin song with a karaoke microphone in public.
PETER (V.O.)
He sings very well. Using
a QR code to collect
donations makes a
difference. Very cool!
Peter watches the video again and again.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd)
For him, could be a job,
a hobby, a career or even a
profession.
DAYDREAM SEQUENCE
EXT. STREET - DAY
Peter (70-80s), wearing similar outfits and installations as the busker, playing a guitar and singing his songs to passers-by. Some passers-by checks his QR Code tent card with their phone QR code reader.
END DAYDREAM SEQUENCE
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Would this happen to me
in the end?
FLASHBACK
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Sitting on the lower deck of a bunk bed, Peter (13) provides private tuition to three CHILDREN younger than him.
After that, Peter, a MAN (60s), a WOMAN (30s) and the Children have dinner together. They all stare at a black-and-white TV set on top of a refrigerator.
After dinner, the Man gives Peter an envelope.
MAN
Inside, your first-month
job wages as a private tutor.
PETER
(Smiling)
Thank you very much!
INT. ROAD - NIGHT
Peter opens the envelope and sees three $10 notes.
PETER (V.O.)
Would it be good for me
to buy the cheapest guitar
tomorrow?
INT. STATIONARY SHOP - DAY
Seeing the display of just one acoustic guitar and the $30 price tag, Peter steps inside and speaks to a SHOPKEEPER (30s).
PETER (Pointing at the guitar)
I want to buy that guitar.
.
END FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Yes, that was what I did,
spending my whole-month
wages on a poorly-designed
guitar made in China during
the Cultural Revolution.
FLASHBACK
INT. HOTEL BACK OFFICE - NIGHT
A bow-tied SUPERVISOR (60s) puts CASH on a round table. A GROUP of young boys and girls surrounds him. Peter (15) and a FRIEND (15) watch at the outer ring. The Supervisor calls names and gives cash to the BOYS and GIRLS.
SUPERVISOR
Peter Cheung! $6!
PETER (V.O.)
(Taking the $6)
I worked 12 hours on a
Sunday to earn it. I think
I'll buy a record tomorrow.
INT. RECORD SHOP - DAY
Sampling the record boxes, Peter, in school uniform, picks up a vinyl record.
PETER (V.O.)
The 12-inch LP costing $18 is .
expensive. I can buy a 7-inch
SP with a song on the A side
and another one on the B side
for $4.5. This 7-inch EP, having
4 songs, at $6, is value for money!
END FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Playing guitar and listening to
hits were my teenage hobbies.
I sang too, but I knew my
constraints.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
At 20, I was recruited into the
civil service. I worked and
developed my civil service
career for 40 years.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
But for the civil services
scholarships that I got, I
wouldn't become a legal
professional.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd)
Upon retirement, I've
begun treating my regular
monthly travels as non-
resting work rather than
a hobby.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd)
As to my current private
legal practice, I'm not
sure if I would like to
make it my old-age
career.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd)
I still like to frequent
music shops, playing the
guitar and singing my songs
in appropriate occasions.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd)
What I'm sure is that
I'd love to lead the rest
of my life as a creative
busker!
Peter takes a look of an acoustic guitar displayed near the sofa.
FADE OUT. The End
