Memory Crash

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

FADE IN:

INT. CLINIC - DAY

PETER consults his DOCTOR (50).

PETER

Doc, just then I got off

at Heng Fa Chuen station!

I've come here once every

16 weeks for years now.

I'm getting senile.

The doctor observes Peter.

PETER (Cont'd.)

I've begun working by

six o'clock today and my

day's highlight is to see

you!

DOCTOR

You aren't forgetful. You

did remember to come

to Chai Wan. Your brain's

storage capacity, like a

computer hard drive might

be full. When you delete

some information, you

revive your memory again.

PETER (V.O.)

That's true. Memories

just fade. If I really forget,

I can't remember to get

off at Chai Wan at all!

Peter nods.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

Doc, my another symptom

is that I feel pressure all the

time. It's pressure to me

if I do no work. It's also

pressure to me when I've

to work!

The doctor slides on a blood pressure measuring cuff around Peter's upper arm and then inflates it.

DOCTOR

Measuring 120/80, normal!

Perhaps you need a good

break to enjoy what makes

you really happy...

PETER

(Excited)

Oh, yes! I want to pay a

a visit to my classmate

whom I last met in 1987.

He lives far away, but I'd

regret it if I don't make

an effort to see him

again.

The doctor smiles.

DOCTOR

(Authentically)

Every day, you must think

of doing something that

makes you happy. And,

you must forget the

unhappy matters as

quickly as possible.

Peter's eyes roll upwards.

PETER

This's my main takeaway

for this afternoon's

consultation! I must

try to forget matters

that generate stress in

me!

Peter thanks the doctor and leaves.

EXT. MINIBUS STOP - DAY

With his iPhone in hand, Peter follows the queue.

FLASHBACK

INT. STUDY - DAY (YESTERDAY)

Peter talks to somebody with a Nokia mobile.

PETER

(To phone)

My computer storage

is full too. It can't

backup my iPhone.

I've decided I don't

need to back up. I

just want to reset

my phone as new

let its memory

crash go away!

Following instructions from over the phone, Peter taps his iPhone 8+: "Setting", "General", "Reset" and then confirms it.

PETER (V.O.)

As a hoarder, this's

my very bold step

to take!

Black screen. Then, the Apple logo. Then, "Hello"... Having fixed a few things, Peter taps: "Setting", "General", "iPhone Storage" .

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

Ha ha! "24.7 GB of

256 GB Used". It was

full. Using just 10% of

the storage space, I

get all I want to do

with this iPhone.

RETURN TO PRESENT

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

My brain might be

similar. There's a limit

to everything. Let me

begin to delete first.

EXT - MTR - DAY

Crowded. Peter's iPhone rings.

CALLER (O.S.)

(From phone)

Counsel, are you in

Hong Kong? Can you

talk now?

PETER

Yes, if you don't mind

I'm inside a MTR train...

Peter then engages in the telephone conversation.

PETER

... Okay, bye now.

Peter follows the crowd exiting from the train.

PETER (V.O.)

Hang on... this isn't the

Admiralty station...Oh,

it's only the Wanchai

station...I meant to go

back to chambers and

not to my former office.

Another memory crash!

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

But I've got better

this time as I detected

the memory crash before

leaving the station! Let

me only remember

matters that wouldn't

bother me!

INT. SWIMMING POOL - NIGHT

Peter swims freestyle swiftly.

PETER (V.O.)

Since I've made up my

mind to delete unwanted

stuff in my brain, I feel

mentally refreshing too!
