FADE IN:
INT. TOILET - DAY
PETER (V.O.)
I'm glad that my
gastroenteritis is over.
Tomorrow, I'll become
a senior citizen. Since I
turned 64, I was so tied
up with work that I haven't
written any song. Could I
write one today?
EXT. ROAD - DAY
Blue sky.
PETER (V.O.)
A music friend suggested
I write a song about the
blue sky...I haven't got
anything on that yet. A
number I want to write is
about the Greater Bay
Area, and I've got the
first line.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)
As half of my golden years
is about to lapse, I think
I should attempt to write
one about turning 65 first.
INT. STUDY - DAY
After surfing the web, Peter takes out a Gibson electric guitar and strums a few chords.
PETER (V.O.)
Everyone is different, due
to nature and nurture. But...
PETER
(Singing)
Have I done all that I'm
fit to do?
PETER (V.O.)
That's about my being
the right person at the
right place at the right
time. But there're other
things I want to do too.
PETER
(Singing)
Have I done all that I
want to do? ...At 65...
at 65...
Picking up a waste paper, Peter jots down the verses. He taps an icon of his smart phone and begins recording.
PETER
(Singing)
Have I done all that I'm
fit to do? Have I done
all that I want to do? At
65, at 65...
Peter then listens to the playback.
PETER (V.O.)
Well, not bad!
PETER
(Singing)
Singing the beauty of
life.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)
I've got the verse of
of the song "At 65".
The climax of the
song should be in the
chorus. But I don't
have any inspiration
yet.
Holding the guitar, Peter relaxes on a sofa.
PETER (V.O.)
I don't know how
many more years
I might live. But
years come and
go. There're 365
days in a year and
365 rhymes with 65.
PETER
(Singing)
365 to live by...
PETER (V.O.)
But what's the point?
PETER
(Singing)
Young ones to be
inspired.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)
That's what I've been
doing. Should there'be
any difference when I
turn 65? I want to make
the rest of the lines
rhyming with the verse...
PETER
(Singing)
Keep calm and be
cool.
Pausing.
PETER (Cont'd)
(Singing)
Do good and be
true...
Peter plays guitar fingering.
PETER (V.O.)
What remains to be
done is the last line
of the chorus, It's
particularly challenging.
If I don't get it, I won't
have a new song.
INT. SWIMMING POOL - DAY
A few swimmers under the sunshine.
PETER (V.O.)
Having nothing solid
for two days, I don't
feel that fit.
INT. MALE CHANGING ROOM - DAY
Peter bathes.
PETER (V.O.)
What should the climax
of the song sound?
I want to make it
simple so that anyone
can sing and get
the message.
INT. MUSIC ROOM - DAY
Guitars. A small guitar amplifier. iPads on music stands.
PETER (V.O.)
The Gibson guitar doesn't
sound right for the song.
Let me try the ESP.
Peter plays fingering with it.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Sounds alright.
Peter records a few takes, listens to the playbacks and retakes them.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
The climax doesn't
sound right.
After jotting down the guitar bars and lyrics in an iPad, Peter sings, plays and records again.
PETER
(Singing)
...I'll follow through...
I'll follow through.
INT. STUDY - NIGHT
Holding an iPad Mini, Peter listens to the playback of his song again and again.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
It's a catchy tune. My
voice is a bit coarse. But
the important thing is
to record the song, or
I'll lose it.
INT. SWIMMING POOL - NIGHT
Getting out from the pool, Peter hums a tune.
PETER (V.O.)
Oh, I've already forgotten
my new song's climax.
Anyway, I've recorded it.
I'm glad that I've succeeded
in writing a song when I'm
still 64!
FADE OUT. The End
