The Opportunity

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

FADE IN.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY

Meeting ends. GENTLEMAN#1 (50s) chats with PETER.

GENTLEMAN

Are you aware of our

Shenzhen development?

PETER

I heard about it. But I

missed the opportunity

to visit it. I had to appear

in court that day.

GENTLEMAN#1

Our professors will go

tomorrow. Would

you be able to join?

Peter checks his phone calendar.

PETER

(Smiling)

Yes! I can make it!

EXT. UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - DAY

A STAFF (30s) passes a sheet of paper to Peter who reads it right away.

PETER

You've made me the

head of the delegation.

STAFF

(Smiling)

Of course! Your're a

Council Member.

EXT. ROAD, SHENZHEN - DAY

Getting out of a mini-bus, Peter looks up. We see a very tall building.

PETER (V.O.)

I've seen this PAFC

Tower from a distance

many times. Now, I'm

visiting it - for the first

time.

A GUIDE debriefs a party of LADIES and GENTLEMEN.

GUIDE

This PAFC Tower is

the tallest building in

Shenzhen, the 2nd

tallest in China and

the 4th tallest in the

world.

Some look up.

INT. PAFC TOWER - DAY

Panoramic view of Shenzhen.

GUIDE

If you look south, you

can see Hong Kong's

Fairview Park.

Peter focuses on low-rise premises in a distance.

PETER (V.O.)

Yes, I can't miss seeing

this Tower from there.

When no one would

invest in premises in

1983, my late wife and

I bought one at a low

price.

GUIDE

You can see the whole

of Shenzhen up here.

Peter sees many high-rise premises.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

Shenzhen has changed

for the better. Hong

Kong does not seize the

opportunity.

GUIDE

It costs RMB200 per

head to get up here.

For you all on this

occasion, it's free of

charge.

A photo session then follows. Peter stands in the middle. Shots taken. GENTLEMAN#2 (60s) approaches Peter and they chat.

PETER (V.O.)

That professor seizes

the opportunity to see

if I could address his

concerns. Pretty

proactive.

EXT. BORDER AREA - DAY

Loading bay. GENTLEMAN#3 (40s) approaches Peter.

GENTLEMAN#3

I overheard that you

deal with IP. Are you

...

PETER

I'm not a techie. But

in designing IP laws,

I've to understand the

technical background.

Gentleman#3 nods.

PETER (Cont'd)

Eg in designing Hong

Kong's IC IP law, I

learned about the IC

technology.

Gentleman#3 looks surprised.

GENTLEMAN#3

My research area is

on IC...

EXT. ROADS, HONG KONG - NIGHT

Sitting with Gentleman#3 inside a coach, Peter chats with him endlessly.

A beat. The coach stops. Peter and Gentleman#3 shake hands.

PETER

Thank you so much

for your sharing! I've

learned a lot!

After parting, Peter walks towards a car park.

PETER (V.O.)

The professor was

the first person who

shared with me all

the particulars about

IC designs and their

latest development.

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd)

I'm glad that what I've

invested in the past

has enabled me to

have an intellectual

exchange with the

expert.

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.)

Yes, we all should

seize the opportunity

to learn to do better!

Key in hand, Peter unlocks his car.

FADE OUT. THE END
