Fair Hearing

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

FADE IN.

INT. SITTING ROOM - NIGHT

PETER checks a phone mail.

PETER (V.O.)

Oh, here' s one that

has gone to my junk

mail box...authorship

opportunity with the

sender on Initial Coin

Offerings or crypto-

assets? Those are

the stuff that I've been

monitoring closely.

Peter types his reply:...I'm interested...more information...

INT. STUDY - DAY

Peter has got mail and reads it.

PETER (V.O.)

Authorship opportunity

for the sender on practice

notes of a system that

that's not yet in place?

Peter cross-refers to the previous mail.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

The initial one is "with"

which sounds alright;

now, it's "for"...

INT. DINNING ROOM - NIGHT

Peter and his WIFE chat over dinner.

WIFE

Why do you have to

write for them?

PETER

(Thinking)

It was just nice that the

sender has mined me

as the author to write.

Peter is reflecting.

PETER (V.O.)

I write literary works

daily and do self-

publishing. I don't

need any other

authorship opportunity.

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

Furthermore, I only do

what I feel like doing

these days.

INT. CLUBHOUSE - DAY

Peter gets mail.

PETER (V.O.)

The other side can't

wait and suggests

meeting up. It's right

they'd get a fair

hearing. Okay, let's

meet at my chambers

then.

Peter types his reply.

INT. CHAMBERS - DAY

Peter welcomes LADY#1 (20s) and LADY#2 (30s).

PETER

Just want to learn more

about the authorship

suggestion.

Lady#1 does a presentation for Peter who nods.

PETER

I've no problem with

the writing...Is access

to the content subscription-

based?

LADY#1

Yes.

PETER

Why do the content

providers write, with

or for, your company?

LADY#1

It's because of...us...

and they've to assign

their rights to us.

LADY#2

You may also write a

book for us.

PETER

(Shrugging his shoulders)

I'm different. I'm creating,

publishing, and accumulating

my own copyright portfolios.

I won't assign. I might consider granting a non-

exclusive licence.

Lady#1 shakes her head sideways.

LADY#1

We want an assignment.

PETER

I won't assign as I want

to showcase that every

one can monetize their IP

in a decentralized fashion.

Anyway, we know each

other's position.

Peter sees ladies #1 and #2 off.

PETER (V.O.)

The knowhow and copyright

can be very valuable, and

strategic IP management

enables authors to monetize

fairly.

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

Their company's business

model still works but the

business environment is

changing.

Pausing.

PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)

Anyway, I've given them

a fair hearing.

FADE OUT. The End
