Above the Clouds

FADE IN
Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - 21:15
PETER scrolls Facebook. A post. Smiling peope in gowns. An award ceremony. The date: 22 Sept, 2026. He isn't in the frame.
PETER (V.O.): My wife and I were above the clouds that morning.
FLASHBACK
EXT. HOSHINO RESORTS, TOMAMU, HOKKAIDO - 06:45
Alighting from a resort coach, Peter and his WIFE walk to the cable car station. They board. The cable car rises.
PETER (V.O.): In 2025, we came to the same resort. Two mornings. Both times, fog. Grey nothing. My wife said, next time.
The cable car breaks through the cloud layer. Light floods in. A sea of cloud below.
PETER & WIFE: We made it!
The sky is enormous.
RETURN TO PRESENT
Act 2
Peter stares at the ceiling. Memories surface.
PETER (V.O.): My wife planned the trip many months ago.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): CX has an annual business class promotion. We're loyal customers.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My wife has been attending a Korean course. Term break was in Sept.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): We were eagerly anticipating our trip.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Above the clouds, the air is thin, but the truth is thick. And the truth is: we're already satisfied.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In August, I received an invitation to attend an award ceremony.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I saw the words. I didn't see the date. I could have been one of the awardees.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): To attend, to congratulate, to smile, to clap, to watch someone else receive what I thought I had earned - that would be embarrasing.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Not for them. For me. Above the clouds, embarrassment has no oxygen.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): So I declined. Not because of the date. Because of the dignity.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Later, when I re-read the invitation again, I read the date: 22 Sept, 2026.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): On that date, my wife and I would still be in Hokkaido.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): If I had been awarded, I'd have to choose.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'd have declined anyway. The trip was more important than anything else.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Lived experience outweighs symbolic validation.
He leans back.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): So I feel good. Not because I wasn't awarded. But because I didn't have to choose. The date chose for me. And the choice was already made.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Let them keep the titles. I kept the experience above the clouds.
Smiling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Moral debts are more human than transactional honours.
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM -22:00
Peter uploads an image to a draft on his laptop. It shows the sea of clouds that Peter and his wife saw on the morning of Sept 22, 2026 at Tomamu, Hokkaido.
PETER (V.O.): In 2025, two mornings of fog. In 2026, one morning of light. The difference was not luck. It was my wife saying, "Next Time".
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I didn't need the award. I'd rather owe and be owed in kindness than be settled in titles. I needed to know the fog would lift. It did.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The best awards are the ones I don't have to decline because I'm already above the clouds.
The END
