  3. Act 1

  4.

  5. INT. RIVERSIDE PARK - LATE AFTERNOON

  6. The sun is low, casting long, amber shadows across the grass.

  7. KAJI sits regally on a wooden park bench, her paws neatly together. PETER sits beside her, one hand resting idly on her back. Kaji's ears are swiveled forward, catching every sound.

  8.  KAJI (V.O.) : The Pack Leader has been gone for a while. Think she got lost looking for a soft drink.

  9. Kaji shifts her weight, letting out a soft, contented huff.

  10. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): This is my time.

  11. Peter scratches behind her ear.

  12. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): The world is good. The Pack Leader will return with her drink. And we'll walk home together, the three of us in the twilight.

  13. Act 2

  14. FLASHBACK

  15. INT. HOME - THIS MORNING

  16. Sunlight streams in. Kaji is curled in her bed by the massage chair. The doorbell rings. Kaji's head snaps up. A single, sharp bark escapes her throat.

  17. The PACK LEADER opens the door to a DELIVERY MAN holding a small package.

  18. DELIVERY MAN: Oh! Wow! Is that a puppy? She's small!

  19. Kaji freezes.

  20. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Puppy? I'm 10 years old. I'm a veteran of many summers.

  21. Kaji looks down at her paws. They're small. Her legs aren't long.

  22. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm a compact model. But a puppy? It's an insult to my years.

  23. The Pack Leader: She's a Shiba. She's...well, she's fully grown.

  24. Kaji doesn't bark again. She simply stares. A silent judgmental stare. The delivery man leaves. The Pack Leader closes the door, holding the package.

  25.

  26. FLASHBACK UPON FLASHBACK

  27. INT. HOME - NIGHT (A FEW DAYS EARLIER)

  28. Kaji weaves between legs under the table.

  29. KAJI (V.O.): My nose is overwhelmed.

  30. Pausing.

  31. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): A new scent hits me like a tidal wave. Dog. Multiple dogs. Old dog. Young puppy.

  32. Kaji tracks the scent to a GUEST who is holding a wine glass talking to Peter.

  33. GUEST: ...and the little dog, the stray, he finally stopped chewing the baseboards. I've five other old dogs.

  34. The guest looks down. Her eyes find Kaji under the table. Her eyes aren't on Kaji's size. They're on her face. Specifically, on her eyelashes and whiskers.

  35. GUEST (Cont'd): Look at you. Look at those beautiful eyelashes -and those distinguished whiskers.

  36. The guest looks up at the Pack Leader, who has rejoined them.

  37. GUEST (Cont'd): How old is this lovely lady? She has the wise eyes of an old soul.

  38. PACK LEADER: She's ten.

  39. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I think they're talking about me.

  40. GUEST: Ah, a senior. The best kind. They keep their puppy charm and their old-dog dignity. You can see it in their eyelashes and whiskers. They tell the whole story.

  41. Later that night, as the guest is about to leave, she kneels down and opens her arms wide.

  42. GUEST (Cont'd): Come here, little old one. Let me have a proper goodbye.

  43. Kaji hesitates for only a second.

  44. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Why not...

  45. Then she trots forward. She steps into the guest's embrace. The guest wraps her arms around Kaji's body.

  46. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I can smell a chorus of dogs on her T-shirt.

  47. Enjoying.

  48. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I feel my own heart beating against the guest's chest.

  49. Pausing.

  50. KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I feel part of a clan.

  51. PETER: She usually doesn't do that with strangers.

  52. GUEST: She knows I understand. Her size is a trick. But her eyelashes and whiskers don't lie.

  53. The guest gives Kaji one final, gentle squeeze, then releases her. Kaji stands there, rooted to the spot, as the guest slips out the door.

  54. RETURN TO PRESENT

  55. Act 3

  56. INT. HOME - NIGHT

  57.

  58. Kaji relaxes in the massage chair.

  59. KAJI (V.O.): I'm not small for my age. I'm exactly the size of my years-compact, complete and perfectly myself.

  60. Pausing.

  61. KAJI (V.O.)(Cont'd): I don't need to run to prove I'm alive. I prove it by simply staying still and knowing.

  62. Pausing.

  63. KAJI (V.O.)(Cont'd): To be embraced by someone who smells six dogs is to be welcomed into a tribe that needs no introduction.
