FADE IN
Act 1
INT. HOME - DAY
Rain hammers against the glass. The world outside is a wash of grey and silver.
KAJI is curled on the cool floor. Her ears twitch with each new drumbeat of water.
PETER sits on the sofa, having screen time.
Kaji jumps onto the sofa before sitting. Her entire side presses Peter's side. She leans.
Peter smiles, reaches back without looking, and scratches the base of her ear.
KAJI (V.O.): This is correct. This is the only sensible shape for a morning. Warmth. Pressure.
She looks towards the window. The rain hasn't stopped.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): The river will be fat and angry today.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Will we be going to the Riverside Park? Probably not today.
Act 2
INT. HOME - LATER
Peter grabs an umbrella. He moves towards the front door. The door opens. He doesn't look back.
KAJI (V.O.): Has he left for something very important?
Later, the PACK LEADER appears, with an umbrella in her hand. She leans down. Gives Kaji a single, firm pat on the head.
PACK LEADER: Be a good girl. Guard the fort.
The door clicks shut.
Kaji stares at the door.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): No. The sky is crying. So why?
MONTAGE OF KAJI ALONE
A. She jumps up to Peter's side of the bed. She sniffs his pillow. She curls there for some time, then leaves.
B. She lies in the exact spot where she was leaning against Peter earlier. His body heat has faded.
C. She watches the rain. It doesn't stop.
D. She rests on the corridor. The light outside turns from grey to darker grey. Then to black.
END MONTAGE
INT. HOME - NIGHT
Dark. Kaji isn't asleep. She's sitting near the front door Facing it.
Her ears are rotated forward like satellite dishes.
Then - footsteps outside. Two sets. One heavy, one light. A key in the lock.
Kaji's entire body vibrates. A low happy groan escapes her throat.
The door opens.
Peter and the Pack Leader stumble in.
Kaji launches forward. She shoves her head under Peter's dangling hand. Then she spins and presses her entire body into the Pack Leader's shins. Then back to Peter. Then a tight, fast circle.
PACK LEADER & PETER. Okay, okay. We're home, we're home.
She stops circling. She looks up at them.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): They smell like the world.
PACK LEADER: Missing us?
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Of course, I do.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I don't understand the crying sky.
PACK LEADER: We got a little wet.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I don't understand the leaving.
PETER: Today is Ching Ming Festival. It's our family's tradition to sweep our ancestors' graves and pay tribute to them. Without them, we wouldn't be here.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I don't understand the long grey hours of nothing.
PETER (Cont'd); The long grey hours, fold themselves around our memories, gentle as paper lanterns drifting on water.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Even in those hours, our love remains a quiet companion?
Act 3
INT. HOME - CONTINUOUS
Peter collapses onto the sofa. He pats the cushion next to him.
Kaji hops up. And leans. Her shoulder against his thigh. Her head on his leg.
KAJI (V.O.): To lean is to say: I'm here. And I'm not leaving first.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I chose to lean in - not because I forgot the loneliness, but because I remember the warmth.
Reflecting.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Tomorrow, the sky may be quiet. And maybe - if I lean hard enough - we'll make it to the Riverside Park, rain or shine.
FADE OUT
