Kaji: The Whine That Won the Bread

FADE IN
Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
Dark and still. The air smells of sleep, and the comforting scent of two HUMANS in bed.
KAJI is tightly tucked into the space between the PACKLEADER and PETER.
The lighting is changing. Then, she extracts herself from the warmth between them.
KAJI (V.O.) : It's breakfast time. I've an accurate internal clock.
Kaji gets out of bed, waiting at the closed door and her claws making a few tick-tick-tick sounds on the floor.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Whenever I do that, someone would open the door.
We see Peter getting up to open the door for Kaji.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): See, I don't have to open the door myself.
She pads out.
Act 2
INT. DINING ROOM - MORNING
Quiet. Kaji's nose twitches. Her eyes scan.
KAJI (V.O.): No smell of bread. No sight of our maid.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): So today, Peter has to put food on the table.
INT. BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Kaji appears and launches herself onto the bed, scaning the humans in bed.
KAJI (V.O.): The Pack Leader hasn't moved. Peter is a lump again.
She walks up Peter's legs, his torso, until she's standing over Peter's face. She looks down at him with an expression of patience.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I like to wake him up by licking his nose.
Slurp.
PETER: Mm...
Kaji licks his nose again. Slurp...
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Hmm, he's determined not to get out of bed...
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): But he knows where to get bread.
Kaji takes a breath. She lets out a high, pitiful and pathetic whine.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's the sign of a hungry Shibu Inu. It'd trigger Peter's parental care response.
Kaji whines again, louder, more tragic. Abruptly, Peter gets out of bed and sees Kaji's soulful and innocent eyes.
PETER: You win again, I'll go and buy bread right away.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Yes. There it is. The guilt.
INT. LIVING ROOM/DINING ROOM - LATER
Kaji waits at the main door. Peter returns with a loaf of bread in a transparent bag.
KAJI (V.O.): Good man!
Soon, at the dining table, Peter tears a piece of the loaf and holds it out. Kaji takes it gently from his fingers.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm the most delicate creature in the world.
.
Peter repeats his offers.
INT. BEDROOM - LATER
They rejoin the Pack Leader in bed.
KAJI (V.O.): The Pack Leader is still asleep. She's a late riser.
Kaji settles down at her feet.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): She's immune to my distress signals.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): If the maid isn't home, she'll feed me.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): But she doesn't have an acccurate internal clock.
Recalling.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I often eat late. Her system is unreliable.
Act 3
INT. HOME - AFTERNOON
Kaji is home alone, She relaxes in the massage chair.
KAJI (V.O.): The whine that won the bread didn't change Peter's habits. It reminds him that my patience can be limited.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.)(Cont'd): Some victories are won with teeth. Mine was won with a sound so small, it could only travel the distance between his pillow and his guilt.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.)(Cont'd): In the end, the bread was just bread. But the whine-the whine was a masterpiece of hope, delivered at dawn.
