Act 1
INT. LIVING ROOM - 09:00
Smartphone in hand, PETER is reading a Facebook post about the findings of a fMRI study that: The brain is not executing a choice that we consciously made in the moment. It acts first, unconsciously, based on processes we have no access to. Only afterwards does it hand our conscious mind the signal - experienced as "I decided."
PETER (V.O.): My "choices" are just biological outputs?
Reading.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Every decision I make is just me executing the biological program in my brain?
Reading.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The brain responds to contextual environmental cues, and the more exposed the things, the more likely I'd reach for them, as it's the easiest way out?
Reading.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): What willpower can do is to change the input ie the contextual environmental cues to arrive at the desired output?
Peter looks up, a frown etching his forehead.
Act 2
FLASHBACK
INT. DINING ROOM - 08:00 (Earlier)
A small pot of honey sits next to his mug. Peter adds a generous spoonful of honey to his green tea.
END FLASHBACK
INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Peter goes to the piano. Sheet music always on its stand. He plays Misty.
PETER (V.O.): The piano is in the flow of my path.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I haven't played my guitars for a while, as they're out of sight.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The spatial bias is clear. Proximity equals to probability.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It isn't about preference. It's about physics and energy expenditure. The easiest path is the chosen path.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Philosophically, I've long been drawn to questions of free will and determinism.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I believe my willpower can shape my destiny. That belief is why I've been making strategic decisions-pursuing goals in every area.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Now that neuroscience explains the mechanism. Philosophy is just poetry for the ignorant.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Or philosophy is the brain's attempt to explain its own confusion.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Did I waste my life by dedicating myself to a passion for philosophy?
Pondering.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): If there's no "me" making a decision, I'm just a leaf in a stream.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The leaf that fights the stream drowns. The leaf that surrenders to it...floats.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Surrender isn't giving up. It's giving in to what is true.
Wondering.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): If we're just chemical reactions, then love, art, justice-they're all illusions!
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The leaf's greatest delusion is believing it remembers choosing to fall from the tree.
He looks at the piano.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm shaped by my surroundings. Everything is a clue to my own predictable code.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): More importantly, if there's no free will, how can we have moral responsibility?
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM - 20:15
Peter uploads an image to a draft on his laptop. For the meticulous, they can see a leaf in a stream.
PETER (V.O.): A leaf in a stream can't fight the current. But it can look up. That's not power. That's presence.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A leaf in a stream doesn't will itself left or right. But if the current favours the open channel, the leaf can learn to drift near the bank where the rocks reshape the flow. That's not freewill. That's wisdom.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A leaf in a stream never knows the final shore. But it sees every bend. Witnessing is the point.
