Living for the Dead

Act 1
INT. DINING ROOM/BEDROOM - 19:00
Modest. PETER sits at the dining table. His WIFE sets down dishes with unusual energy.
PETER (V.O.): We usually eat after 20:15.
They begin eating.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): We're going to a drone show tonight. It starts at 21:12.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm just happy to have a night out with my wife.
After dinner, Peter goes to the bedroom.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Let me see what the drone show is about.
He pulls out his smartphone, typing into the search bar.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Ah, to celebrate Leslie's 70th birthday.
Act 2
EXT. WEST KOWLOON CULTURAL DISTRICT - 20:30
The promenade is barely visable in the distance. The walkway is a maze of barriers. Construction works block the direct route. His wife leads, following her phone's GPS.
WIFE: The GPS guide is useless.
PETER: We don't come here often.
Peter and his wife walk frantically in one direction and then in another.
WIFE: I think we'll miss the show.
After turning a sharp corner into a pedestrian lane, they hear some background music.
WIFE (Cont'd): I think we're on the right track now.
Then, Peter feels they're blocking a group that's coming in fast from behind.
PETER (V.O.): I know time is tight.
Turning his head, Peter sees an elderly, frail WOMAN in a wheelchair is being guided by ASSISTANTS#1 and #2.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The lane is too narrow to pass quickly safely.
He pulls his wife to the side, pressing his back against a construction barrier.
PETER: After you.
The assistants push the wheelchair past. Peter and his wife follow closely behind as they finally burst out onto the open crowded lawn of Wonderland.
PETER (V.O.): At last.
A low hum echoes from the sky. The show begins.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I know there're 1956 drones as Leslie was born in 1956.
We follow the CROWD to gaze at the synchronized drones rising into the air like glowing stars, shifting colours to form a massive, luminous silhouette of Leslie.
CROWD: Whoa!
Suddenly, ahead of them, the wheelchaired woman begins to struggle upwards. The two assistants grab her arms, supporting her weight.
ASISSTANT#1: Oh...you don't have to stand up! You're 100 years old!
The 100 years old woman ignores the remark, staring at Leslie's silhouette in the sky.
PETER (V.O.): What a fan!
Peter stares at the woman and then his wife.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): They're both united in a quiet, glowing reverie under a sky full of artificial stars.
Wondering.
PETER (V.O.): I'm confused. Who do people worship celebrities like this? Especially when Leslie died so long ago, on April 1, 2003. What's the point?
Pondering.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Does the dead need the living's happy birthday wishes?
The nine-minute show ends. Peter asks an AI Agent about his queries, and reads the response.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Psychology calls this a parasocial bond. When fans celebrate a deceased star, they aren't expecting the star to see it.
Reading.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): They do it to process their own life history and grief. Sharing this public tribute creates a powerful sense of community and shared identity among strangers.
Reading.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): For that 100-year old woman, his art might represent the youth and joy of a bygone era. It's a ritual of gratitude.
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM -23:00
Peter uploads an image to a draft on his laptop. It captures a drone sky show displaying shimmering light formations, includng the message: Happy 70 Birthday, To Leslie with Love.
PETER (V.O.): We look up at the sky not to bring the dead back, but to remind ourselves that the beauty they created still hangs over our world.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Grief is just love that has nowhere to go. When we direct it towards the stars, we're not living in the past-we're making space for love to survive.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Living for the dead is the ultimate act of gratitude. It's the living saying to the past: What you did mattered, and who you were changed who I'm.
