Act 1
INT. LIVING ROOM - 19:30
PETER sits at an upright piano. On a side table is a half-full bowl of sweet potato dessert. Kaji, the family pet, is guarding it. Following an online tutorial, Peter's fingers pick out Joseph Koo's song "Shanghai Teng".
PETER (V.O.): I'm not just playing. I'm dissecting. I want to compose better songs.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It needs to breathe...like a sigh...a gentle sigh.
He plays a few bars again. And then his face lights up with childlike wonder.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I think I can add or subtract some notes in my songs.
He takes a look at Kaji.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): What do you like? The notes or the space between the notes.
He plays the song's intro. It sounds reasonably well. A wave of satisfaction washes over him.
Act 2
FLASHBACK
EXT. RIVERSIDE PARK - 18:45 ( Yesterday)
Deceptive evening. Peter pushes a pet stroller, his WIFE holds Kaji's leash. They arrive at a sitting area.
PETER: You go to buy your coffee. We'll wait here.
WIFE: I'll be quick.
Peter and Kaji settle on a bench. A few minutes later, the wind picks up and then the rain comes.
PETER (V.O.): OMG, not a gentle shower but a near solid wall of water!
Peter opens his umbrella, shielding Kaji and himself. Then a flash of lightning followed by a deafening crack of thunder.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, my baby is terrified. She trembles violently.
He puts his arms around Kaji tight. Then, through the downpour, he sees a soaked figure-his wife.
PETER: OMG, you didn't have an umbrella?
WIFE: I didn't bother. Thought I'll back in a few minutes.
His wife gets her umbrella from the pet stroller. Peter notices she has no coffee.
WIFE (Cont'd): The paper bag just disintegrated in the rain...
EXT. SILVERSTRAND BEACH- 17:30 (Today)
Peter is walking along the wet sand. From the hillside, several small channels of water are craving their way down the sea, creating rivulets in the sand. Peter stops and watches.
FLASHBACK UPON FLASHBACK
INT. BEDROOM - 09:30 (Today)
Sitting up in bed with a phone in hand, Peter watches shaky video clips, showing a massive flash flood roaring through a valley, and running people, tiny as ants, being swept away.
PETER (V.O.): The incident is castastrophic.
Reading.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Some scientists say that it was triggered by a glacier collapse.
Reading.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The Himalayan glaciers are melting at an accelerating rate due to rising temperature and climate change.
END FLASHBACK UPON FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The same element. Different scales.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Getting soaked was nothing. A paper bag breaking was nothing. It was just...noise.
RETURN TO PRESENT
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Getting caught in a storm is nothing compared to what others endure. Gratitude comes from recognizing this.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Music doesn't live in the keys I press. It lives in the air between them.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The piano gives me a language for my emotions. And I'd treasure it more.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The final movement of a life is not a crescendo. It's a fermata-a pause that holds everything.
He stops playing.
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM -22:15
Peter uploads an image to a draft on his laptop. It refers to the blank gaps on the staff that visually represent silence or sustained duration.
PETER (V.O.): In youth, I fill every space with noise-afraid of the emptiness. In age, I finally understand: the emptiness is where the truth breathes.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The lighting came and went, Thunder roared and faded, I sat at the piano and played the space between notes-in that stillness, I found a peace that no weather could touch.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): We spend our lives searching for the right notes. But love is the silence that hold them together.
The END
