Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - 08:30
Sunlight filters through the curtains. PETER sits up in bed, checking unread WhatsApp messages on his phone.
PETER (V.O.): Today is the 7th Day of the year of the Horse. My sister has already sent a greeting card to the family's chat group.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I wrote a song celebrating the 7th Day of the new year a few years back. Could use that.
He mines the song from his YouTube channel, humps a few bars.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's only for one day in a year. I like to think that it's not old.
But he stops.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Feels like a rerun. Need something different.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): We celebrate the same day every year, but we're different people celebrating it. The horse may be the same, but the rider has new experience.
Act 2
INT. LIVING ROOM - 10:00
Peter taps an AI image generator, types his prompt, and hits Enter. A moment later, a traditional, bland image with Chinese characters appears on screen.
PETER (V.O.): Mundane. Good for most.
He copies his prompt and repeats the process with another AI image generator. Soon, we see a new romantic image with short Chinese sentences. Peter's eyes light up.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): This is it!
Peter then checks other unread messages on WeChat and WhatsApp. He sends his romantic greeting card on the 7th Day of the year of the Horse to Yeh, Ming Ming...Then he stops at one.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Sean wishing me Merry Christmas? I missed it entirely.
He sends his card. And seconds later, he gets all good wishes. A wide genuine grin spreading across his face. He leans back on the sofa, relieved and happy.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A "Merry Christmas" found on the 7th Day of the year of the Horse isn't late. It's just proof that some connections don't have an expiration date.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I spent days too busy to reply, and it took a traditional greeting card from my sister to remind me that a moment of my time is the only gift that costs me nothing but means everything.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Timeliness is less important than thoughtfulness.
INT. OLE SPANISH RESTAURANT - 13:00
Elegant. Peter and his WIFE, YAN and CHARLES are seated at a good table.
PETER: This morning, I asked the AI for a romantic card. It didn't know my memories, but it guessed them right.
The appertizers are put on the table.
PETER(Cont'd): I'm particularly happy as I've reconnected with Sean. I've been thinking about him from time to time.
Pausing.
PETER: His name sat in my phone for many weeks, a digital ghost. One image with all good wishes, and he's flesh and blood again.
The main courses are served.
PETER (Cont'd): The food tastes the same every year here. But the stories we bring to the table are always new. That's the recipe.
Later, they enjoy their coffees and desserts.
CHARLES: Do you swim every day?
PETER: Yes, if I'm in Hong Kong. Seven days a week. My doctor says I might add five years to my life if I persist.
Charles understands.
PETER (Cont'd): But every time I enter the water, I make peace with the possibility I might not come back.
The table grows a little quieter, listening.
PETER (Cont'd): On the 5th day of the year of the Horse. Went to Repulse Bay to make a difference for my daily swim. I was the only one in the water. Didn't think of anything of it, just got in.
Charles looks curious.
PETER (Cont'd): Got out to the bathroom and then I saw a banner, warning potential swimmers that there is no lifeguard service and the shark prevention net has been removed for maintanance.
Peter pauses for effect.
PETER (Cont'd): Could have been a cramp, could have been hypothermia, could have been a shark just passing through.
All except Peter gasps softly.
PETER (Cont'd): I can't wait for the sea to be calm and the net to be up to decide to live. I've to swim in the water I'm given.
It's obvious that those listening hold different views.
PETER (Cont'd): I recognize the risk, accept it, and find joy in the moment anyway.
The finish their annual lunch.
Act 3
INT. LIVING ROOM - 22:30
Peter uploads an image featuring a delicious serving of seven cuts of meat, symbolizing the 7th Day alongside golden French fries to a draft on his laptop.
PETER (V.O.): The 7th Day. Not the beginning of the year, not the end of anything. Just a day where the universe nudges me to pay attention.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Celebrating life is often about blending the past with the present - old friends and new stories.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm lucky. Life gives me a day where everything connects: a sister's card, an old friend's reply, and a table of people I love. That day is today.
The END
