PETER is watching TV news. We hear: ...the world-first COVID-19 vaccine.
PETER (V.O.): Oh, as alerted in late July, 2020, Russia has actually approved their COVID-19 vaccine for limited use before January 1, 2021.
We hear: We've no data about the Russian vaccine...We've doubts about its safety and effectiveness.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In July 2020, US was talking about their Operation Warp Speed. There're media stories about candidate vaccines beginning their Phase III clinical trials.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Then, Russia announced that it might approve a coronavirus vaccine in August 2020.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Russia doesn't have a good track record of drugs discovery though.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's smart that Russia named the vaccine as SPUTNIK V.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Russia's rocket science did beat the US in the 1950s.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Actually, China has approved a COVID-19 vaccine for limited use in June 2020. What drives Sputnik V?
Act 2
INT. STUDY - CONTINUOUS
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Innovation/creativity is an exercise of intellectual efforts.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The innovative/creative process begins with research to widen vision and refine ideas. They, in turn, inspire deeper learning and thinking.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): That's how I've been maintaining and sustaining my creativity.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A collaborative innovative/creative process like brain-storming can refine the concept or hypothesis further, leading to better design of the innovative/creative project.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In hit-song composition, the Lennon-McCartney partnership is one good example.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But innovative/creative teams need the necessary expertise to capture, create and deliver the value propositions.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): To launch a rocket, rocket-science capability is needed. To develop a vaccine, the vaccine-discovery capability has to be there.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But when I wrote my first serious number nearly 10 years ago, I didn't have any experience in musical composition.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But then, I was very passionate and believed that I could write a song.
FLASHBACK
INT. OFFICE - DAY (2010)
Peter (56) is discussing with a GENTLEMAN (59).
GENTLEMAN: Our senior colleague is retiring. I think we should sing her a song in her farewell party.
PETER: To seek a copyright licence to sing somebody's songs may not be cost-effective.
GENTLEMAN: I'm thinking of singing her a song out of copyright.
The gentleman attempts to sing. Peter isn't amused.
PETER: I've never heard of the song. Others won't be familiar with it either.
Thinking.
PETER (CONT'D): As our role has been to protect the results of innovation/creativity, why don't we set an example?
Thinking.
PETER (CONT'D): I'll write her a song.
END FLASHBACK.
PETER (V.O.) (CONT'D): That was how I was motivated to write my first serious song.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (CONT'D): The creative process was enjoyable and so it had intrinsic value. When the song was performed in the party, there was extrinsic value as all could appreciate.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (CONT'D): After that, I've been persistent in composing - until recently.
Pondering.
PETER (V.O.) (CONT'D): I believe I need newer thinking and better expertise. And I've been distracted by my screenplay writing.
Hearing a background song from TV.
PETER (V.O.) (CONT'D): Am I finding excuses for my relaxed attitude?
Act 3
INT. STUDY - CONTINUOUS
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.): The world is undergoing a pandemic. In safeguarding national safety, every country has to play a proactive role to provide a timely solution. That's why there's the coronavirus vaccine race.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Russia wants to win again. And it can win under its own standard.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Whether SPUTNIK V is safe and effective in the longer-term, only time will tell.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Conventionally, Phase III clinical trials take 1-4 years to complete. The COVID-19 pandemic has been with us for less than a year.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Propaganda can't deceive intelligent people, but it helps the stupid ones deceive themselves unknowingly.
TV breaking news. We hear: New Zealand is shutting down again.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Wasn't it just days ago that New Zealand claimed it was first country in the world that was coronavirus free?
