Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - 08:30
The room is filled with soft, grey morning light. A digital clock on the beside table tells the time. PETER blinks and looks at the clock.
PETER (V.O.): Eight-thirty!
A slow geniune smile spreads across his face.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I went to bed at 00:30. Eight hours. A full night.
He stretches his arms above his head.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The body knows what it needs. I like to believe that the world can pause for eight hours for me to catch up.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): At 0:30, I closed my eyes on one set of worries. At 8:30, I opened them to a different world.
Peter swings his legs out of bed, the motion easy and pleased.
Act 2
INT. LIVING ROOM - 10:30
Sitting on a sofa, Peter gets a WhatsApp message.
PETER (V.O.): It's from my elder daughter.
Peter reads the message a few times:..Offer...
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Great She got it. After the final round in Seoul just yesterday...
He smiles broadly and types his response enthusiastically.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A week ago, she came home immediately after quiting a job that was making her miserable.
Later, Peter is on his iPad Mini, taping away diligently. The cheerful PING of a correct answer on Duolingo. He's doing his Spanish lesson.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I've learned that joy doesn't have to be announced. It can be quietly in my chest while I do my Duolingo and no one has to know.
After finishing the last lesson, he moves to the piano in the corner and begins to play a simple, cheerful piece.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My playing may not be perfect, but it's the progress that truly matters.
INT. SWIMMING POOL - 15:00
Peter emerges from the pool entrance, his hair still damp. He's carrying a small swim bag.
PETER (V.O.): I'm invigorated.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Where should I go for afternoon tea to celebrate this wonderful day?
He strolls towards the MTR station.
INT. LUCKY CHA CHAAN TENG - 15:30
Peter walks into an unmarked place. He sits at a corner table. He orders from the PROPRIETOR.
PETER: 乾炒牛河 and a cup of Ovaltine please.
Moments later, a plate of noodles nicely seared, darkened by soy, with slices of beef and bean sprouts is placed before him.
PETER (V.O.): Happiness, properly wok-fried, doesn't arrive slowly. It arrives all at once
Peter takes a bite. He chews it.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The cooking is good and the flavours are delicious; however, I find the sliced beef to be less tender than I expected.
He takes more bites.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The Cantonese understand something profound: that the ordinary, done extraordinarily well, becomes sacred. 乾炒牛河 is their proof.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The smell of soy and garlic on a hot wok doesn't just feed me - it reminds me who I'm and where I come from.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The best meals aren't the ones I plan. They're the ones I stumble into with an empty stomach and open mind.
Peter finishes his 乾炒牛河.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Content is a clean plate and a quiet afternoon.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A great 乾炒牛河 is about wok hei - the breath of the wok. The same is true of a great life: I need that elusive, untranslatable fire that passes through me and leaves everything changed.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Age gives me two gifts: the patience to wait for good news and the wisdom to recognize it when it arrives.
Peter approaches the cashier and pays with cash.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When I'm gone, I hope my children remember that their father woke up every day and tried to earn his own happiness so he'd have room for theirs.
Act 3
INT. LIVING ROOM - 21:45
Peter uploads a photo of a plate of stir-fried noodle dish accompanied by a cup and chopsticks
, set on a wooden table to a draft on his laptop.
PETER (V.O.): Luck isn't lightning. It's slow and quiet - a job offer, a plate of delicious noodles - arriving so close together I almost miss the pattern.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): We call it luck because we can't explain it. But may be it's just life catching up with all the good you've put into it.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Some days I plan. Other days I just live. Today, I lived - from 0:30 to 8:30 to a plate of 乾炒牛河 in Cha Chaan Teng called Lucky. If that's not enough, I don't know what is.
The END
