Courage To Try

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

Have you ever thought about the possibility of writing your own songs? For decades, I ruled out the hard option and only wished that somebody would write good songs to celebrate occasions or something. But for decades, my wish did not come true and I myself did not have the courage to try.

In a 2018 mainland Chinese New Year TV variety show, I heard the nursery rhyme of "London Bridge Is Falling Down" with festive Chinese lyrics. While the 'fusion" sounded awkward to me, I also reckoned how hard it was to create an original melody. I believe the Mandarin version of my song "Very Good Wishes!", if deployed, would have a better impact.

I have only committed to writing melodies and tri-lingual lyrics since the winter of 2010. I deployed a problem-solving strategy that no hard option should be ruled out as it could be the simple, direct and best solution to a problem. Moreover, the harder the execution, the more sense of achievement we created.

I consider the melody and the English and Mandarin lyrics of my song "Very Good Wishes!" represent my breakthrough in composing. The song was so well received that I was even asked to write for others, just like my wish way back when. However, what I have been showcasing is the creativity in us ie "If I can do it, so can you!" - only if you have the courage to try!
