It is Summer/Winter holidays, depending on where you are - in the North or in the South. My younger daughter doing her matriculation at Brighton has reunited with our family pet. My younger son doing medicine at Sydney plays piano at home again before resuming his studies next week.
During an elevator ride yesterday, two Chinese girls chatted loudly with an American accent in my presence. I would only chat quietly with my returning children in Cantonese. While writing a paper determination in Chinese, I even tried to learn more simplified Chinese characters.
To me, writing reasonings and developing the law in Chinese is harder than in English. In order to make my determination easy to follow, I devised a new structural format. Soon after I sent it to the secretariat today, I got the reply: "It looks good," and so it was published.
English has been the preferred language in Hong Kong particularly in the old days when few could speak it. I take pride as Cantonese as the dialect is very difficult to learn. Meanwhile, I am still learning to write better Chinese as another paper hearing in Chinese is awaiting me!
