FADE IN:
INT. LAW LIBRARY - DAY
Box file in hand, PETER in suit wanders around the stacks of movable bookshelves. A WOMAN teaches him what button to press.
Peter is attracted to a few shiny thick books with "AIR LAW' on their spines. He picks a volume and quickly turns over the first few pages.
PETER (V.O.)
Oh, Peter Martin has become
a consultant editor.
FLASHBACK
INT. FRERE CHOLMELY PREMISES - NIGHT (1987)
A cosy Solicitors firm. A GENTLEMAN talks to a group of LADIES and GENTLEMEN of different nationalities. They all listen attentively and admirably. Peter (32) is among them.
GENTLEMAN
...for the exams...students
spend lots of effort and money
to come over to study... it's
unkind to fail them just for the
sake of it...
Class dismissed. Peter chats with the Gentleman
GENTLEMAN
You're from Hong Kong ah?
If there's any new development
you report to us!
Peter nods.
GENTLEMAN (Cont'd)
Done!
BACK TO PRESENT
Peter checks a few other books and leaves.
INT. STUDY - NIGHT
Peter stares at the texts on his computer screen.
PETER (V.O.)
I've done the Statement of
Grounds. Not sure if they can
be deployed in both the appeal
and the petition processes...
He finds something from the phone.
PETER (V.O.)
There's a statutory form... I've found it at last! I'm just
new to human rights appeal
The rest is easy.
INT- INTERVIEW ROOM - DAY
Papers and files on desk. A LADY (30s) talks to Peter in suit in the presence of an INDIAN MAN and an INDIAN LADY.
LADY
It's great that you've prepared
the Grounds. The Statement can
be attached to the Notice. Let
me make copy of it first.
Exits the lady who returns with another copy.
INDIAN LADY
(Looking at the Statement and to the Indian man)
You're very lucky!
(Then to Peter)
How can he prepare all that
without your help!
The Indian man wears a big smile.
INT. STUDY - DAY
Peter in suit looks tired behind his computer.
PETER (V.O.)
To prepare for the afternoon
conference, let me add value
by preparing something new.
He types: "Grounds for leave to appeal..." and struggle to continue with his tired eyes.
A pause.
Looking at his watch.
PETER (Cont'd) (V.O.)
Okay, I've done it. What I've
added should be able to tip
the balance.
He presses the print key. We hear printing sound and see sheets coming out from a desk-top printer.
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY
Papers and files on a long table. Peter takes the Chair while GENTLEMAN#2 in suit and a causal-wear MAN are by his side.
PETER
(Pointing to one set of papers)
I have modified the draft and
added something new... they
should make a difference...
INT. TRAIN CAR - DAY
Crowded.
PETER (V.O.)
To settle two appeals in a day
is new to me.
Checking his phone.
PETER (V.O)
A message from the Academic
Registrar?
We see the message: "...it was lovely to meet you at the graduation dinner last week..."
PETER (Cont'd) (V.O.)
Oh, yes, we chatted about
screenwriting, particularly
the thrill of creating something
new...
(A Pause)
Oh, yes! He should read my
recent post entitled: Seafood
Risotto. He's one of the
characters featured in that
script!
Hand in cheek.
PETER (Cont'd) (V.O.)
Tomorrow I'll experience
something new.
INT. STUDY - NIGHT
Phone rings.
PETER
Hello.
CALLER (O.S.)
I call to say hello as I'm your
new wealth manager...
FADE OUT. The End
