FADE IN:
INT. RESTAURANT - DAY
Elegant. Sitting around a table of about a dozen PEOPLE is PETER. A gentleman HOST (60s) chats with all.
HOST
It has been years that
we haven't returned to
Hong Kong. We haven't
seen any blue sky at all.
Is this the new normal?
GENTLEMAN#1
No, the sky was blue a
week ago.
PETER
Yes, Hong Kong's sky can
be quite blue!
HOST
Peter, why won't you write
a blue-sky song?
PETER
(Smiling)
Great idea!
PETER (V.O.)
What an honour to me!
A suggestion from a
talented music graduate
and conductor. He's
the head of household
of a music family...
INT. LUNCHEON - DAY
Peter chats with a lady ACADEMIC (40s) and a lady ENTREPRENEUR (50s) sitting near him.
PETER
I've written trilingual
songs and hope to
commercialize them.
I've a new Happy Birthday
song...I can sing it now..
Peter sings: "Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday to you..."
ENTREPRENEUR
Why wouldn't you write
a "Greater Bay Area"
song?
ACADEMIC
Yes, it's your field, you
can do it!
Peter smiles and nods.
PETER (V.O.)
Yes, I've got not just
"Blue Sky", but "Greater
Bay Area" on my song-
composition plate now...
I haven't had the time
to write any songs since
last Easter.
INT. CHAMBERS - DAY
The CHAMBERS' HEAD (50s) sees Peter reading in an open area surrounded by stacks of thick books.
CHAMBERS' HEAD
I've watched your music-
videos repeatedly. They're
really festive.
Peter smiles.
PETER
Thank you for your
support!
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
This's a great feedback.
Not just watching, but
repeated watching. Perhaps
my recent music -videos
were without subtitled
lyrics...
INT. RESTAURANT - DAY
Cosy. Eight PEOPLE, including Peter are having tea and dim-sums. A PROFESSOR (60s) tells stories passionately, capturing Peter's full attention.
PROFESSOR
...That visually-impaired
Cantonese folklorist
performed in Radio
Hong Kong from 1952-
1972.
FLASHBACK
INT. TENEMENT - DAY (1950s)
Shabby and shut, with many ADULTS. A brown radio at a corner. Peter (3-6) hears distinctive Cantonese folklore sounds as he pushes flip-flops as toys on the floor.
INT. FARM HOUSE - DAY (1960s)
Open and bright, with Peter's GRANDMOTHER (60s) and chickens around. A light blue plastic radio on a shelf. Peter (7-9) hears distinctive Cantonese folklore sounds as he makes his own toy craft with lolly sticks and rubber bands.
RETURN TO PRESENT
Catching Peter's enthusiasm in listening to the Professor's stories, a LADY (60s) intervenes.
LADY
(To Peter)
You now get inspiration
to write your songs!
Peter nods.
PETER (V.O.)
The Queen's "Bohemian
Rhapsody" fuses pop with
opera. I can fuse my folk
rock with Cantonese folk-
lore. Perhaps, I would
develop the genre in a
"Greater Bay Area" song!
Peter's eyes look bright.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
But before I can try that,
I've to go back to
chambers even on a Sat
to prepare for my court
appearance next week.
INT. CHAMBERS - DAY
Silence. Peter is all alone, studying the small prints of a thick book. Some sounds, a female LAWYER (20s) appears.
LAWYER
Peter, you've got a song
on Valentine's Day. Right?
Peter nods.
LAWYER (Cont'd)
Your last verse is about
Valentino...
PETER
Yes?
LAWYER (Cont'd)
It isn't Valentine who
shoots the love arrows,
it's Cupid!
Peter looks enlightened.
PETER
Oh, yes, you're right!
Thank you very much
for pointing that out!
PETER (V.O.)
Oh, my God, she's
taken my lyrics seriously.
That's my blind spot!
What a constructive
criticism!
Peter's eyes turn up and right.
PETER (Cont'd)
I'll make an amended
version and publish it
next year!
INT. STUDY - NIGHT
Peter works at his computer.
PETER (V.O.)
I'm so glad that I've
got such support from
my music friends.
Peter checks a Facebook LIKE notification. We see a PHOTO of a group of eight people including Peter.
PETER (V.O.)
I always believe if we do
something, such as
performing or singing
something, we all can
be somebody under the
blue sky!
FADE OUT. The End
