FADE IN:
INT. ROAD - DAY
Coming out from a car park, PETER hesitates.
PETER (V.O.)
Should I go swimming or
leave it till evening? I
I could miss a few business
if I go now.
Peter walks towards residential blocks.
INT. COURT OFFICE - DAY
Peter chats with a GENTLEMAN#1 (50s).
OFFICER
Could you take up a morning
assignment tomorrow?
PETER (V.O.)
Well, I've another assignment
in the afternoon. And busy
doesn't mean better.
PETER
I need to leave at 1.00 am.
Do you really need my help?
Gentleman#1 nods.
PETER
Okay, I'll do it!
PETER (V.O.)
The can-do mindset in me
works again.
INT. STUDY - NIGHT
Peter studies a file and makes a call.
PETER (V.O.)
I've to wait for a return
call. I won't be able to
go swimming tonight.
Peter sighs.
A beat.
Peter looks at the papers and files around him.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
It's good that I stayed home
to get myself better.
prepared.
INT. COURT OFFICE - DAY.
An ASSISTANT (20s) passes to Peter piles of papers to sign off.
PETER (V.O.)
Not only that I've done
my job and learned
something in the special
scenarios, I also feel better
equipped for my April
assignment.
INT. COURT CORRIDOR - DAY
Coming out from a court room carrying box-brief cases, Peter chats with GENTLEMAN#2.
PETER
Back to work, right? I didn't
eat much before the hearing.
I want to maintain my sharp
focus in my work...
They leave the court house together.
EXT. MTR - DAY
Packed. Peter holds on to his box-brief case.
PETER (V.O.)
What a hectic day! I took
on the challenge and did
my jobs reasonably well.
FLASHBACK
INT. EXAM HALL#1 - AM (1980)
An examination question sheet on Epistemolgy, Peter (26) in casual outfit writes tirelessly in an answer book.
INT. EXAM HALL#2 - PM (1980)
Peter in the same outfit underlines a case name Hedley Byren v Heller in an answer book.
END FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd)
That was hell, mentally
speaking. I sat a Philosophy
paper in the morning and
then a Law paper in the
afternoon. For the first
time, I felt my mind struggling
from the abstract to the
concrete.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Today is really nothing when
compared to that. Prosecutions
in the morning and civil
litigation in the afternoon are
legal practice nonetheless.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
I still have the urge to learn
and the capacity to earn.
I can now even imagine
how life was like if I began
private practice in the 1980s.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Now, I deserve a good
break.
EXT. ROAD - DAY
In a very casual outfit, Peter jogs to a car repair shop. We see a cyber-green Beetle adjacent to it.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Okay, my car is ready for
my collection. I don't care
how much they charge me.
INT. SWIMMING POOL - NIGHT
Few souls. Peter swims in a circular lane.
PETER (V.O.)
More and more, I find my
private practice high in
stress but light in substance.
We hear announcement; ...closing in five minutes..." Having done a few butterfly strokes, Peter gets out of the water.
FADE OUT. The End
