FADE IN:
INT. STUDY - DAY
The table clock registers noon. PETER stops keying his computer.
PETER (V.O.)
I've already done hours
of work today. The first
of May is Labour Day!
Let me think of doing
something that makes
me happy.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd.)
Last year today, I was
in Canberra, visiting
a friend for the first
time in 17 years. I
chose to meet on the
First of May, so that
I'd remember.
We hear Elvis singing with feeling from Peter's iPhone: "I'll remember you... long after this... endless summer has gone... "
FLASHBACK
INT. CLASSROOM - DAY (1971)
A teacher teaches the CLASS as Peter (17) daydreams.
PETER
Today is the First of May.
There won't be a chance
for me to sing the Bee
Gee's number in public.
INT. CINEMA - DAY
We see on the screen montage sequences depicting child actor Mark Lester and his movie girlfriend in "Melody". After a melodic prelude, we hear: "When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall...." Watching with Peter from the floor is a GIRL.
PETER (V.O.)
It's a puppy love movie.
The songs back up the
right mood and tone.
END FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
During my adolescence,
I sent some love letters
and received some.
With his iPhone in hand, Peter researches.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Although the puppy love
movie disappointed
supporters in the West,
it was a hit in Japan and
in latin America.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)
Oh, it was originally
marketed as "S.W.A.L.K"
meaning: "Sealed
With A Loving Kiss"...
FLASHBACK
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - NIGHT (AUG 19, 1992)
Peter (38) sits close by a bed where his WIFE (36) takes her last breath. Peter seals their relationship with a deep and long loving kiss.
END FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.)
Recently, I've discovered
that Elvis' "I'll Remember
You" was written by Kui
Lee - a Chinese-Hawaiian.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
My late wife and I visited
Hawaii in 1989. We could
feel the Hawaiian mood.
Peter takes a deep breath.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Lee lived a brief life due
to cancer. My late wife
as a children's choir
conductor too.
Peter takes an audible deep breath.
INT. SITTING ROOM - DAY
Relaxing on a sofa, Peter checks incoming mails. Seeing a banana in Peter's hands, KAJI sits close to him.
PETER (V.O.)
Here's a notification from
Vimeo. I haven't visited
it for a long time. Let me
check what I've published
there.
Peter sees a video clip entitled: "Forever Happy Together".
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Oh, this's the song I wrote
in the summer of 2017 as
wedding gift to a friend.
I've forgotten both my
melody and my tri-lingual
lyrics.
Peter taps the "Play" arrow and watches the clip, including the subtitled lyrics.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
It's not bad at all. As
a singer-songwriter, and
producer of the music
video at no cost, I did
my level best! On par
with "I'll Remember
You" or "First of May"?
I admired Kui Lee's
1966 recording just
months ago!
Peter smiles and shares some banana with Kaji.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Why did Bee Gees name
the song as "First of May?
Peter researches with his iPhone.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
I see! It was the birthday
of Barry Gibb's dog.
After it had passed away,
the day became a day
to morn. I can understand
that.
Kaji's eyes say she wants more. Peter gives her a big piece. Finishing it in no time, Kaji rests her mouth on Peter's lap.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
Kaji, you make me feel
happy. Let me hug
you before exercising
my labour again!
As it's being hugged, Kaji is overwhelmed.
FADE OUT. The End
