Act 1
INT. LIVING ROOM - 09:00
Sunlight streams across a clean desk. PETER sits at the desk, a piece of blank paper in front of him. He lifts a ball pen, then stops.
PETER (V.O.): Let me check what I wrote on April 1, 2025...
He reaches into his wallet and pulls out a folded piece of paper covered in his own handwriting. He reads it.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Good enough.
Peter's expression shifts from tension to a quiet acceptance. He stands up, leaving the paper and ball pen untouched.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Not a fool again. Not today.
Act 2
EXT. GOLDEN BAY PARKING LOT - 14:30
A cloudy day. A numeric blue SMART City-coupe - Peter's - pulls into a parking lot. Peter gets out with his swim bag. He gets close to the parking meter - a digital unit with a screen. He sees two TRAFFIC WARDENS. One is checking parking meters occupied by cars. The other is printing a ticket and placing it on the windshield of a car.
Peter watches for a second, then turns to the meter. He taps the meter screen until 45:00 and a QR code appear. He pulls out his phone, opens the parking app, scans the QR code and taps "Purchase".
On his phone screen, a digital timer appears: 45:00. It begins to tick down. He looks up at the meter's digital display, expecting it to mirror his phone.
PETER (V.O.): Being processed...
A police car drives past.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Better wait until the minutes show up on the meter.
Then, the meter screen reads: EXPIRED.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Haven't I purchased my 45 minutes?
He refreshes the app on his phone. The app confirms his active session: 44:32 remaining. He looks back at the meter. EXPIRED.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd):The wardens are working their way closer.
His jaws tightens.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Should I double pay?
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): No. No. I'm not doing that. It's a matter of priinciple.
He sees a customer service number on the meter. He dials.
PETER (to phone): Hello. My meter no. is 22184...
KEN (from phone): You're at Golden Bay.
PETER (to phone): Right. I've just purchased 45 minutes of parking via the app, but the physical meter is showing expired.
KEN (from phone): Yes, I can see your session...
PETER (to phone): I need this rectified before I leave my vehicle. The traffic wardens are issuing tickets nearby.
KEN (from phone): I can arrange that...but you've to wait. It takes at least five minutes...tell the wardens...
Peter hangs up. He plants himself next to the meter. He leans against it, arms crossed. The traffic wardens move on without troubling Peter.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The minutes feel long though.
He checks his phone. The timer is now 37:12. He looks at the meter. EXPIRED.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Hmm...
Finally, the meter screen flickers: 00:33. Peter stares at the number.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I lost 12 minutes of my purchased time, waiting for their error to be fixed.
A flicker of the old tension returns.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): That's not fair.
He looks out at the water of Golden Bay in a distance.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Through no fault of my own, it's a small thing.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Last year's experience...again, through no fault of my own, it's a big thing.
Peter lets the tension go. The calm settles over him.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Thirty-three minutes. Right then.
Peter speed-walks across the sand, dropping his swim bag on a spot. He doesn't wade in the water gently.
He swims with a powerful, efficient freestyle, pushing himself.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm making good on the lost time.
He reaches a distant buoy, touches it, and swims back just as fast. He emerges from the water, breathless.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm efficient.
Act 3
INT. LIVING ROOM - 22:30
Peter uploads an image to a draft on his laptop. It shows a parking meter displaying a remainng time of 00:33 and the time stamp 2026-04-01 14:46.
PETER (V.O.): Last year taught me what a real problem looked like. This year, I can spot a small one from a Km away.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The fool fights every battle. The wise choose the ones that matter.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Thirty-three minutes. Fully lived.
The END
