PETER (V.O.): Somebody has turned my official photo into an image with the Joker make-up.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I was championing creativity and copyright. Copycats hated me.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): From their perspective, I was a fool - the super villain.
RETURN TO PRESENT
Act 2
EXT. ROADS - CONTINUOUS
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But people never understand the damage they did to others until the same damage is done to them.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): They preferred their obsession, chaos and anarchy.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): While I was obsessed with creativity, order and law enable people to live and let live.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I thought copycats used their anger to mask their shame.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Shame was the painful feeling of humiliation caused by the consciousness of their wrongs.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Not just that they did wrong, but their lack of capacity to be original.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): What I disliked the most was that they exerted popular pressure to right their wrongs.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): They got support from like-minded people. Many made bad jokes on me over the Internet or in public engagement occasions.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I thought whether those acts were the best they could do? Weren't they starting jokes on themselves and Hong Kong too?
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Without creating and delivering value, how can Hong Kong has its creative industry?
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): For awhile, they sent hundreds of similar messages to me, demanding policy explanations.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): As Director of Intellectual Property, I responded to each and every one of them adequately and timely.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I managed to persuade a few.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Anyhow, the Government, as guardian of public interest, had to strike a fair balance among competing interests.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): As a result, Hong Kong's copyright law regime didn't become anti-copyright. Otherwise, it'd be a non-laughable joke.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The fundamentals continue to apply, as time passes by.
Act 3
EXT. ROADS - CONTINUOUS
Peter continues to stare at the Joker device.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): One of the earliest pop songs I heard was Bee Gee's "I Started a Joke".
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's a sad song, singing implicitly that life isn't worth living, making people feeling the thought.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It carried me, as life then was hard. I thought I was the result of a biological trap.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Here and now, I think the "I" who can start a joke is a wonderful serendipity.
Pondering.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Even if life is a joke, I still believe life is worth living.
Smiling a little, Peter drives past the goods vehicle.
FADE OUT.
