Act 1
INT. STUDY - DAY
PETER is checking phone notifications.
PETER (V.O.): Here's a leisurely answer request: What types of movies have I been enjoying and are there any movies that I would recommend?
FLASHBACK
Peter is taping buttons on a TV remote control.
PETER (V.O.): I'm so glad that I've a new TV set. It has advanced my level of audio-visual entertainment.
Peter watches the display on the TV screen.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, I can watch programs that have been shown already. Let me see the Cosmos series.
Peter hits a button on the TV remote control.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Four episodes. Okay. I love to watch such documentaries as they help me understand my being in cosmos.
Peter begins to watch, attentively.
END FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Yes, some people just live and die without such investigation. I should share my view although such spacetime odyssey can be boring to many.
Act 2
INT. STUDY - CONTINUOUS
Peter types on his phone.
PETER (V.O.): Perhaps I should also recommend one movie drama that I find excellent.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): My wife and I watched 2019 Oscar's best picture - the Parasite. We didn't like the change of genre mid-way. The change disturbed our emotional flow.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): I love the 2018 film "Shoplifters" a lot. I didn't know it was a great film beforehand.
Smiling.
PETER (V.O.)(Coint'd): I was prosecuting quite a lot of shoplifting cases and thought the film might contain some entertaining twists and turns.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The cast all acted very well. Later, I was so pleased to see in TV interviews of some of them while I was touring in Japan.
Smiling.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Yes, before the pandemic, I visited Japan nearly every month.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Yes, I'll recommend my Quora fans to see "Shoplifters" and explain why.
Peter types on his phone.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): A film can't be great without a great screenplay. Well, the message of the film is that people with no blood relationship can be a good family.
The TV is broadcasting some violent scenes and we hear the ANCHOR commenting that seven nights of riots since the death of a black man at the knee of a white policeman.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Yes, racial discrimination in US hasn't gone away after 400 years.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): And a lot of evil, or good, can be done in seven long days.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): To condense a good story into a two-hour movie is hard. So a way is to provide the necessary information to the audience and let them fill up the particulars, including their emotions.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): That's one reason why I think the film should be recommended.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): But that I find the film special is more to that. What's that?
We see images of violence appearing on the TV screen and then Trump making a speech.
PETER (V.O.): To quail violence in US, the job at the beginning belongs to the police. Then, the states sent in their National Guards.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Trump takes the street violence as domestic terrorism. He threatens to send in the military to solve the problems for state governors and mayors if they can't restore peace. That will be the end game.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): In Hong Kong, to quail violence from beginning to end has been the job of the Police. The PLA Hong Kong garrison hasn't intervened. We don't have any agency in the middle ie the equivalent of the US National Guards.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Will the Central People's Government follow the US model and introduce para-military Police in Hong Kong?
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): For the sake of Hong Kong's stability and prosperity, the recent riots in Hong Kong evidence the need for some agency between the Hong Kong Police and the PLA Hong Kong Garrison.
Act 3
Peter looks enlightened.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): I get it! I find the film "Shoplifters" special because it doesn't start from the beginning. It starts from the middle of the story, then the beginning, and then, the end!
Peter types on his phone quickly and then hits Submit.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): How the story is told in the film is very creative and therefore it interacts with the audience subtly.
A beat.
Peter checks his Quora answer again.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Well, several hundred views within an hour. Some may be interested to find out what a creative order can be.
Pondering.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Like my being in the cosmos, I didn't witness its beginning and won't see its end.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Even if the humankind became extinct during my lifetime, the Earth, in whatever form, will continue to exist.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): My story, and other humankind on Earth, neither begins from the beginning nor ends at the end, objectively speaking.
Wondering.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Yes, that makes humankind special.
Nodding.
FADE OUT.
THE END
