Act 1
INT. HOME - EVENING (Yesterday)
KAJI lies on her bed, chin on paws. Her ears perk up towards the front door.
She stands. stretches, observes the PACK LEADER and PETER.
KAJI (V.O.): It's about time we get to the riverside park.
PACK LEADER: Sorry. Not this time. We're going to a concert.
PETER: Stay home. Good girl.
They leave. The door closes.
Click.
Kaji stands. Alone.
She returns to her bed. Circles twice. Curls into a tight roll.
Kaji's eyes. Watching the door. Still.
Act 2
EXT. RIVERSIDE PARK - AFTERNOON
A gentle breeze. Kaji trots ahead of the Pack Leader and Peter, nose to the ground.
She passes a patch of freshly mown grass, Lowers herself. Relieves herself.
Later, she jumps up and sits on a bench. Peter sits beside her.
She leans her weight against Peter's body.
KAJI (V.O.): That's good. This is correct.
EXT. THE FAMILY'S NEW CAR - CONTINUOUS
Peter drives. The Pack Leader in the passenger seat. Kaji stares from the back seat. The buildings slide by.
KAJI (V.O.): Where are we going?
PACK LEADER: We didn't take you out yesterday...a surprise for you....
Kaji brinks slowly.
INT. DOG PLAY SPACE, MALL - LATER
The indoor play area is designed for social, high-energy dogs.
Noise. At least half a dozen dogs. Running. Barking. Kaji freezes.
KAJI (V.O.): Am I suppoosed to like that?
Then, a puppy barks in her face.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I've watched the leaves change nine times. I don't need a lesson on what noise feel like.
Kaji doesn't growl. She simply turns her head away.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): They call it a dog play space. But I don't want to play.
The chaos continues. Dogs collide, Some attempt to sniff Kaji.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I call it a place where peace goes to be sniffed to death.
PACK LEADER (to Peter): The car's fully charged now. I need to park our car away from the charging lot. You take care of our pet meanwhile.
Kaji jumps up onto a bench to sit. Peter joins her.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): A quiet spot isn't a place. It's a person who doesn't need me to perform.
Then, Kaji sits on Peter's lap.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): A lap isn't a throne. But when the world is too loud, its the only spot that makes sense.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Quaity time doesn't require action.
But the peace is short-lived. A tiny fluffy Maltese, wearing a red harness nestles right beside Kaji.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): But I don't want to be touched.
The Maltese looks up with big, curious dark eyes and a slightly tilted head.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Such a bold little intruder...
Kaji tolerates the Maltese with calm resignation.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): But I've pride and emotional limits.
A PET CARER nearby remarks.
PET CARER: This Shiba Inu's personality is very different.
Act 3
EXT. MALL PARKING LOT - EVENING
Peter carries Kaji to the car. Her paws dangle. She doesn't resist.
He sets her gently in the back seat.
Kaji immediately curls into her travel donut.
The Pack Leader gets in.
PACK LEADER: That was fun, right?
Kaji's eyes. Unimpressed.
KAJI (V.O.): The Pack Leader spends so much energy trying to make me act young again. But she spends all her energy teaching me that stillness isn't emptiness.
