Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - LIVING ROOM - MORNING
Bedroom. Soft grey light seeps through the curtains. KAJI opens one eye. Her ears twitch. She lifts her head. She walks softy to the living room.
KAJI (V.O.): Our maid's shoes are gone.
Kaji registers the absence.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): She left early today. I didn't hear the door.
Kaji returns to the bedroom.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Peter will wake up hungry.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): They think I don't see the small things. I see everything. I just don't make a fuss.
Kaji jumps onto the bed to rejoin the PACK LEADER and PETER.
Act 2
INT. BEDROOM - DINING ROOM - LATER
Kaji keeps an eye on Peter. She doesn't move. She doesn't whine.
KAJI (V.O.): Patiently I wait.
Peter stirs.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, he's waking up.
Kaji leaps from the bed. He turns and walks towards the dining room.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Follow me Peter.
Dining room. Kaji and Peter sit across each other. Peter opens a bag and takes out two loaves of bread. He breaks them into small pieces.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): He'll pass them to me one by one. I don't have to snatch.
Gently, Kaji takes the pieces as Peter eats his share. Drinks water from a glass.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): He doesn't measure. He doesn't hurry. This is how I know the day has begun properly.
Kaji chews. Her ears rotate toward the bedroom corridor.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): The Pack Leader is still asleep. That's fine. But I don't know when she'll feed me.
INT. BEDROOM - LIVING ROOM - LATER
We can hear the Pack Leader's soft breathing. Kaji rests at her feet.
KAJI (V.O.): She was busy during the night. I'll be lucky if she wakes up at noon...
Noon. The Pack Leader swings her legs out of bed. Her eyes are half-closed. Kaji leaps from the bed to join her.
PACK LEADER: Your mealtime
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Long gone.
We hear the sound of pellets hitting ceramic. Kaji trots to her meal bowl. She begins to eat. Slowly, Methodically.
The Pack Leader watches for three seconds. Then she suffles to the sofa.
Kaji eats. He turns her head mid-chew.
The Pack Leader is already lying down. Her chest rising and falling in sleep.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): She served me before she sat down. That's love. But she fell asleep before I finished. That's also love. Just a different shape.
Finishing her meal, Kaji retreats to her kernel - a soft. cave-like dog bed with raised edges. Blankets inside.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Love isn't always a leash walk in the rivierside park. Sometimes love is a bowl of kibbles and a sofa snore. The kernel understands both.
Kaji watches the Pack Leader sleep on the sofa.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'll wait in my own corner. She'll wake in her own time. Love dosn't need to be loud.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): The kernel isn't escape. The kernel is return. I stay here not to hide, but to remember who I'm before the world asks for more.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I don't want to disturb the Pack Leader. That's the highest form of love: knowing when my presence is a gift and when my absence is a kinder one.
Kaji closes her eyes.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'll wait. She'll wake. Then Peter will put on his walking shoes. Then the riverside park.
Late afternoon. Golden light. The Pack Leader is awake. She sits on the sofa, rubbing her eyes. She sees Kaji inside her kernel.
PACK LEADER: Rivierside park?
Kaji emerges from her kernel. Tail up. Ears up. She goes to sit on the sofa.
Act 3
EXT. RIVERSIDE PARK - CONTINUOUS
Sunlight on the slow brown water. Other dogs in the distance. Kaji walks between the Pack Leader and Peter. Her mouth slightly open. A Shiba Inu's smile.
KAJI (V.O.): The maid leaves early. The Pack Leader sleeps late. Peter shares bread. None of this is a problem. Because at the end of the day, we walk in the riverside park.
Kaji's nose works on every blade of grass.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): This is the routine. This is the love. I don't need to understand it. I only need to show up.
Kaji takes a look of the Pack Leader and Peter.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Every dog has a kernel. Every human should find one. A corner where love waits without demanding.
