Still. Kaji's eyes are fixed on the window, though she's no longer really looking. Her mind drifts.
FLASHBACK
EXT. RIVERSIDE PARK - EVENING (Days ago)
The park is lush with green. Kaji is lying on a wooden bench, the Pack Leader and Peter by her side.
PACK LEADER: Look at her - so contented.
PETER: Yes, she loves the fresh air.
They watch the famiy turtle exploring here and there.
KAJI (V.O.): I know Peter is letting him stretch his legs, but he won't let him out of his sight.
END FLASHBACK
Kaji' s gaze shifts towards the closed bathroom door.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): It appears the family turtle isn't inside.
Then, she goes to check the family turtle's container by the window.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh there he is, missing the world.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Hurry makes them forget what matters.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Family isn't just who you remember; it's who you refuse to forget.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Poor guy, he can't advocate for himself.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Love is measured not in grand gestures, but in the quiet refusal to leave anyone behind.
Dusk settles in. The shapes of furniture become soft sihouettes.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's growing dark.
Kaji is still in the hallway, but now she's standing, listening. The only sound is the hum of the refrigerator.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Let me wait at the front door.
DAYFDREAMING
A. The sound of the key in the lock. Kaji's head shoots up.
B. The door swings open, flooding the hallway with light from the corridor.
C. The Pack Leader and Peter stand in the doorway.
END MONTAGE
The darkness deepens, the place becoming a landscape of shadows.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): The longest day isn't measured in hours. It's meaured in heartbeats spent hoping for the sound of a key in the lock.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): Absence doesn't just hurt the one who leaves. It carves a hollow in the one who stays.
Pausing.
KAJI (V.O.) (Cont'd): A few hours can feel like abandonment to me as my entire world revolves around their return.
Act 3
INT. HOME - NIGHT
The door clicks. The handle turns. Kaji sees the Pack Leader and Peter, looking tired. She lets out a series of sharp, happy yaps and jumps up. She circles them, herding them.
KAJI (V.O.): I greet them like soldiers returning from war - except my war was fought in silence, on a hallway door, with nothing but hope as my weapon.
Kaji takes a look of the PackLeader.
KAJI (V.O.)(Cont'd): I spent my longest day guarding a turtle - because I understood that family means staying, even when staying is all I can do.
Kaji glances at Peter.
KAJI (V.O.)(Cont'd): The longest day wasn't about time - it was about the love that filled every empty hour.
