Act 1
INT. SLEEPING ROOM - MIDNIGHT
Lying in bed, PETER is listening to the radio. After the midnight news, we hear the DJ remarking: Happy birthday to the world's most durable DJ. Uncle Ray is 96 years young...
PETER (V.O.): Oh, Uncle Ray was born on December 12. He turns 96 today.
We hear Matt Monro's number: Born Free.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I can't send Uncle Ray my Happy Birthday song. Let me see if I can delicate a song to him.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I know he introduced Matt Monro in a show he hosted. The singer residing in Hong Kong in the early 1950s was then unknown in the international music scene.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I love Matt Monro's songs too. Eg The Portrait of My Love, Softly As I Leave You and Walk Away. But they aren't appropriate for the occasion.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Let me see if I could get in touch with the substitute DJ first.
Rising in bed and grabbing his phone, Peter calls but they aren't answered.
Act 2
INT. STUDY- AFTERNOON
iPad Mini in hand, Peter leaves a webinar.
PETER (V.O.): I've just updated myself about securities law impacting on Mainland China and Hong Kong.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When I first studied Chinese law from 1983-1984, there wasn't much to study. Now, municipal Chinese law follows closely the American standard.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): During my hectic law studying days, my only leisure was to follow Uncle Ray's program - All the Way With Ray, from 10.00pm, Mondays-Fridays.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): I often fell asleep after listening to just a few songs.
Peter researches with his phone.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Uncle Ray's program All the Way with Ray first began in 1970. And the Guinness Book of World Records named him as "The World's Most Durable DJ in 2000."
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I spoke casually with him in person once in a CASH Annual Dinner.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Now is 2020. It was only days ago that he was prevented from hosting his program due to the 4th wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Apart from Matt Monro, who would be his other favourite singer or group?
Peter finds something.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): SCMP has a 2017 article covering Uncle Ray's mixed feelings when he turned 93 while his long-time friend Mona Fong died earlier at the age of 83.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Mona Fong's songs should appeal to him. But they might bring back mixed feelings.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I met Mona Fong in person once at the Jade Plaza in 1999. She was attending to some details near the premises. She was already a very powerful lady in the entertainment industry.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My department was sponsoring an exclusive premiere show of the movie Inspector Gadget to reciprocate my Pledgees for respecting IP.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Actor Chow Yun-fat was our Guest of Honour, helping us to promote creativity.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I sent my wife in a chauffeur-driven Government Car AM71 to escort Chow and his wife to the venue.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Many other guests came. President Cheung of the Hong Kong Inventors' Association volunteered to take a photo of me and my wife with his 3-D camera.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): He dedicated his life to innovation. He died in 2013 at the age of 96.
Researching.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Matt Monro died in 1985 at the age of 54.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The other day I walked past an exhibition about the late singer Teresa Teng. She was 42.
Act 3
INT. STUDY - CONTINOUS
Peter finds something.
PETER (V.O.): I've found All the Way With Ray's Facebook address.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): While I believe celebrating birthday anniversaries is quite meaningless for those living within their normal lifespan, those who can live beyond that should be celebrating for every extra day particularly anniversaries.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): This is especially so when the person is the World's Most Durable DJ, bringing music to people's ears.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.): Uncle Ray is a legend. He has become my role model as to how to add years to life and life to years.
INT. SLEEPING ROOM - NIGHT
Lying in bed, Peter is about to sleep.
PETER (V.O.): Just hope that the 4th wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong will soon go away.
FADE OUT.
THE END
