  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. EXT. HIGHWAY - 18:48

  4. In a green New Beetle, PETER sits in the passenger seat. His WIFE drives. The dashboard glows. She glances down.

  5. WIFE: Oh, the engine light is on again.

  6. Peter sees that. He pulls out his phone to capture a photo.

  7. PETER: I need to tell Fat Boy about tomorrow and this...we're flying out soon, and we don't know if the repair work of our Previa has been completed.

  8. He texts Fat Boy, and then watches the engine light again.

  9. PETER (V.O.): Not sure how long this one can hang on...

  10. Fat Boy responds. He reads the message:...should be able to let you have the Previa back tomorrow...

  11. PETER (Cont'd): I'm telling Fat Boy that I'll drive this New Beetle to his garage tomorrow evening and to collect the Previa if it's ready.

  12. He texts Fat Boy. He looks relieved.

  13. Act 2

  14. EXT. HIGHWAY - CONTINUOUS

  15. Traffic jams ahead. Peter looks nervous.

  16. PETER (V.O.): There must be a traffic accident...I just hope that our car won't break down and delay others further.

  17. He hears a notification tone from his phone. He opens the message: credit card...was charged $72 at Wilson's Parking...Any doubt, call...

  18. PETER: I didn't drive and park today.

  19. WIFE: What?

  20. PETER: My credit card. A debit. $72. Parking fee. Incurred today.

  21. PETER (V.O.): Any doubt, call...

  22. He calls.

  23. WIFE: It could be the Previa...

  24. PETER: No way. The Previa is still under repair...Fat Boy parks the car in his own garage...

  25. PETER (to phone): ...so there's the parking charge...but it wasn't me who parked there...

  26.  CUSTOMER SERVICE (from phone): Is your card still with you?

  27.  PETER (to phone): Yes... but I've used it not too long ago...

  28. CUSTOMER SERVICE; Do you want to enquire or stop the card right away...

  29. PETER: I want the card stopped.

  30. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Okay...

  31. WIFE: Stopped?

  32. PETER: Stopped.

  33. WIFE: If someone stole your card number, would they just spend $72?

  34. Peter opens his mouth. Closes it.

  35. PETER (V.O.): True, I should have asked Fat Boy first...but he had had the opportunity to tell me moments ago...but he didn't.

  36. WIFE (Cont'd): And now you've to update your payment for every service linked with the stopped card.

  37. EXT. PARK - 20:25

  38. Peter sits on a bench. Kaji, the family pet, by his side. He texts Fat Boy with his phone: Parking. $72. Was that you?

  39. He sees some hesitated typing and then: Yes...the testing route ran long...I tabbed my card to pay...no wonder my tab didn't register...paid by you already...I'll pay you back.

  40. Peter texts back: I thought it was fraud...I stopped the card.

  41. We see Fat Boy apologizing. Peter doesn't respond to it.

  42. His wife approaches, sitting beside him.

  43. PETER: You're right. It's Fat Boy.

  44. WIFE: The right response to ambiguity is in inquiry, not assumption. Ask first. Then act.

  45. PETER: I'm not cool enough.

  46. WIFE: You just expect people to be straight with you.

  47. PETER: Yes, I was comfortable assuming the Previa isn't ready. That comfort made me passive.

  48. PETER (V.O.): I know what "stop the card" really means - I've lost control and this is the only lever I can pull.

  49. WIFE: But if the $72 stake was just a test payment before a larger transaction by a fraudster, you'd have done the right thing.

  50. PETER (V.O.): I stopped the card because I thought I was protecting myself. I was. Intuitively, I was protecting myself from the truth - that Fat Boy has already breached his trust. Stopping the card was easier than facing that.

  51. Act 3

  52. INT. BEDROOM - 22:00

  53. Peter uploads a photo to a draft on his laptop. It shows part of the credit card that Peter stopped.

  54. PETER (V.O.): The modern man's first instinct in crisis: Stop the card. Not ask the question. Not wait for the answer. Stop the card. It's an illuson of control in a world that doesn't offer any.

  55. Thinking.

  56. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Stopping the card is an act of faith - faith that I'm right, faith that fraud is real, faith that I'm not overacting. But faith without evidence is just fear with a phone.

  57. Reflecting.

  58.

  59. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Stopping the card is easy. It's a phone call. A decision. Living with the assumption that everyone is out to get me - that's the hard part.
