The Language of Love

  3. INT. BEDROOM - 08:45


  4. Sitting up in bed, PETER checks emails on his mobile and his eyes widen.


  5. PETER (V.O.): A payment receipt for an introductory course on Korean?


  6. Peter furrows his brows.


  7. FLASHBACK


  8. EXT. ROADS - 15:45 (Yesterday)


  9. Inside a cyber-green New Beetle, Peter's WIFE is driving. She talks to Peter excitedly.


  10. WIFE: I've decided to enroll on a Korean course.


  11. PETER (grinning): That's great! I'll join you. We can be classmates.


  12. END FLASHBACK


  13. As his face lights up, Peter watches his sleeping wife by his side.


  14. Act 2


  15. FLASHBACK


  16. EXT. ROADS, BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA - NIGHT (Feb 17, 2024)


  17. Inside a Hyundai Genesis G70, a MAN is driving. Their elder DAUGHTER sits in the passenger seat in front, while Peter and his wife sit at the back seats.


  18. PETER: It was a really joyful dinner! We've set the crucial action dates in Busan and in Hong Kong.


  19. DAUGHTER: It has never occurred to me that after the families' discussion over dinner, I'm getting married!


  20. PETER (V.O.): The driver is our son-in-law-to-be.


  21. PETER: Mom told me after dinner that she'll learn Korean...


  22. Their daughter turns her head.


  23. WIFE: I'm very impressed that you can now talk to your future mother-in-law in Korean.


  24. PETER: Me too.


  25. WIFE: I want to be able to communicate with her in Korean.


  26. PETER (V.O.): What a change!


  27. FLASHBACK UPON FLASHBACK


  28. INT. RESTAURANT, MYEONG DONG, SEOUL - NIGHT (Jan 2023)


  29. Peter and his wife are having dinner with their elder daughter and her Korean boyfriend. As they talk, their daughter does the interpretations in Japanese.


  30. PETER (to WIFE): That's how they communicate as former classmates in Japanese. I think I'll learn the Korean language.


  31. WIFE: I won't.


  32. PETER: But Cantonese is very difficult to learn.


  33. WIFE (to daughter): Tell your boyfriend that he'd learn to speak better English.


  34. END FLASHBACK


  35. DAYDREAMING SEQUENCES


  36. A. Classroom. Night. Eager STUDENTS. Peter and his wife are seated at desks.


  37. B. At the front. A Korean TEACHER writes on the whiteboard and explains the Korean language.


  38. C. At the desks. Peter and his wife take notes. Peter poses questions to the teacher occasionally.


  39. RETURN TO PRESENT


  40. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Having attended Harvard's executive programs in early 2000s, I thought I'd never be a student again.


  41. Pausing.


  42. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I was so wrong.


  43. Pausing.


  44. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Apart from attending the language course, I've to sit exams.


  45. Thinking.


  46. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): What if I fail in the exams?


  47. Pausing.


  48. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): And would my nightmare about exams recur?


  49. Smiling.


  50. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I've to think that love doesn't keep a score of wrongs or failures.

  52. INT. BEDROOM - 12:30


  53. Peter inserts an AI drawing entitled "The Language of Love" to a text.


  54. PETER (V.O): Learning a language requires time and sentience - like learning love.


  55. Thinking.


  56. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Commuting between languages is like our love to commune between cities and cultures.


  57. Reflecting.


  58. PETER (V.O): We may speak in different tongues but we're united with the language of love.
