The Long Sleep

FADE IN
Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - 10:02
Soft daylight fills a modest bedroom. The bedside digital clock reads: 10:02. PETER stretches. He turns his head to look at the clock.
PETER (V.O.): Oh, 10 hours.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The dreams were vivid. Not the usual jumble. The characters. The scenes. The actions. Just...replayed.
He takes a deep, unhurried breath.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I feel the air filling my lungs.
He swings his legs out of bed with agility.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I feel new...Like someone took out all the batteries, gave them a good charge, and put them back in.
He touches his chest, feeling the steady heartbeat.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Unlike my recent travels, I'm not chasing the day. The day can come to me.
Act 2
FLASHBACK
INT/EXT. ASASHI ONSEN, YUMOTO YUKOMANSOU - 6:45 (18 Sept, 2026)
Premium. Hotel room. Peter is already awake while his WIFE is fast asleep.
PETER (V.O.): After a late night onsen, I slept right away. My wife slept late. She needs to find the mapcodes of places that we should explore.
Peter grabs his phone.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I've seven Duolingo streaks to maintain.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I also want to do a quick onsen before our scheduled breakfast at 8.am
Peter goes to the bathroom and starts practising Japanese.
Onsen. 7:30. Steam rises from the outdoor rock pool. Peter is alone, soaking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The water is hot. The air is cool.
Restaurant. 8:00. Peter and his wife take their seats at a reserved table.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The breakfasts at onsen hotels are similar.
Shopping corner. Peter's wife checks if there's any item she must buy.
PETER: You take your time. I need to go to the toilet,
Room. 9:50. Peter's wife is finishing her make-up. Peter is doing a final check of the room.
PETER: The check-out time is 10:00...
Front desk. 9:55. They are with their baggage. Peter hands over the keys. The STAFF checks the monitor, nods and then bows. They bow back.
PETER: Good. We're in time. I read a Google review that the hotel takes the check-out time very seriously.
Carpark. 10:00. Peter is putting their baggage inside a Toyota Pruis e-four.
WIFE: Go ahead and start the car while I punch in our mapodes.
EXT. 4TH OBSERVATORY, DAISETSUZAN, ASAHIDAKE - 11:07
They stand before a breathtaking vista of lakes and a not-too-distant volcano. They capture the moments with their phones.
PETER: Since we can see steam coming out from the volcano, we shouldn't climb it.
EXT. TOLL ROAD - 16:45
Inside their rental car. Peter is driving, his wife navigating.
WIFE: If we miss the exit, we won't make the next onsen hotel before sunset.
PETER: Have you booked dinner at the hotel?
WIFE: Yes...and check in has to be done well before 6pm.
PETER: Got it...I won't miss it...alert me...you know my eyesight is deteriorating.
INT. SOUNKYO CHOYOTEI, KAMIKAWA - 17:15
Luxurious. Front desk. Peter's wife is negotiating with a RECEPTIONIST.
RECEPTIONIST: Your dinner session is at 5:30pm. No other choice. Sorry.
Peter wife isn't happy about having no choice.
PETER: That should be fine this time, since we want to watch the light show before it closes at 9pm.
WIFE: So, dinner in 15 minutes.
RETURN TO PRESENT
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM -22:00
Peter uploads an image to a draft on his laptop. It shows interactive lighting effects where Autumn leaves scatter in response to human movement, along with fantastic digital art illuminated by LEDs - the "Miracle Illuminate" at Kamikawa, Hokkaido on 18 Sept, 2026.
PETER (V.O.): A long sleep is not an escape from life. It's life's way of letting me catch up with myself.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The onsen soaked my body. The long sleep soaked my soul. Rest isn't a reward for finishing. It's the way I begin again.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The best sightseeing is the journey back to myself. The best destination is a good night's sleep after a day well-lived.
