Frightening Ideas

Updated: Nov 30, 2020

  1. FADE IN.

  2. Act 1

  3. INT. SITTING ROOM - DAY

  4. Phone in hand, Peter checks new phone notifications.

  5. PETER (V.O.):Here's an answer request: John Cage said: "I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones." Which ideas of the past or now do you find frightening?

  6. Pausing

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): John Cage? A familiar name.

  8. Peter surfs the web with his phone.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh yes. He wrote "As Slow As Possible". His piece has been playing since 2001 by a specially-built organ in a German church. In Sept this year, the chord changed for the first time in 7 years.

  10. Pausing.

  11. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): It was international news, and I came to know him.

  12. Pausing.

  13. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Yes, he also wrote 4'33". His score instructs performers not to play their instruments in the piece's 3 movements.

  14. Pausing.

  15. PETER (V.O.): New ideas and applications in the old composing context. Were they frightening?

  16. Act 2

  17. INT. PUBLIC SWIMMING POOL - LATER

  18. Peter swims, thinking at the same time.

  19. PETER (V.O.): An idea is a rough mental construct. If people can't think of new ideas, such may not be frightening, as some people don't have new ideas.

  20. Pausing.

  21. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): But if a new idea calls for action, it may disrupt a status quo. And the issue is whether the new idea creates and delivers value.

  22. Pausing.

  23. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): A concept is a refined idea which has gone through a review process.

  24. Pausing.

  25. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): But the terms "idea" and "concept" are used interchangeably. I need not be that analytic as if I'm fudging the question.

  26. EXT. PARK - HOME - LATER

  27. A wet-haired Peter walks along a path, recalling something.

  28. PETER (V.O.): I do find certain ideas or concept frightening - "freedom" and "democracy". Whatever actions taken under such cliches seem noble.

  29. Pausing.

  30. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): But freedom in society is never unregulated. Freedom is never absolute anywhere, and this is the international standard.

  31. Pausing.

  32. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): But some people want to speak and do whatever they want as if freedom is absolute.

  33. Pausing.

  34. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): As to democracy ie the control of the group by the majority. If the majority becomes unruly, democracy can die in darkness, leading to tyranny.

  35. Pausing.

  36. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Such political behaviours can happen in democracies.

  37. Pausing.

  38. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A further frightening idea or concept is "standard", that is the norm to evaluate something.

  39. Pausing.

  40. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Some countries and institutions advocating "freedom" and "democracy" often apply double standards towards different peoples or countries.

  41. Pausing.

  42. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): And some people are narcissistically ignorant.

  43. Pausing.

  44. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): The crux of my fright is that some countries, institutions and actors aren't really civilised and peace-loving. And they won't collaborate to do public good.

  45. Taking a deep breath, Peter arrives in a block's entrance.

  46. INT. BLOCK ENTRANCE - LATER

  47. A carpet on the floor catches Peter's attention. He finds an angle and takes a photo it.

  48. PETER (V.O.): The light and shadow on the carpet fibres appeal to me. The photo I took represents my expression of an idea, via an old readymade object.

  49. Pausing

  50. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Is my idea/expression new or old, not frightening or frightening?

  51. Act 3

  52. INT. BLOCK ENTRANCE - LATE AFTERNOON

  53. No more sunshine. Peter and his SON walk past the dark-orange carpet.

  54. PETER: Take a look of the carpet.

  55. His son looks at it. Then, Peter passes him his phone to see an image.

  56. PETER: Can you recognize this image? It's the carpet.

  57. His son looks shocked.

  58. INT. SITTING ROOM - NIGHT

  59. Sitting on a sofa, Peter is thinking.

  60. PETER (V.O.): Being compelled to accept a change of status quo for the worse is frightening. Voluntarily embracing change for the better is satisfying.

  61. Pausing.

  62. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's my choice to take the carpet snapshot believing the image would arouse others' emotion.

  63. Pausing.

  64. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I believe my work has artistic value too. Let me call it "As Quick As Possible/Split Second"

  65. Smiling.

  66. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): And, I'm Peter Cheung.

  67. Peter types his reply to the Quora answer request.

  68. FADE OUT.

  69. THE END
