FADE IN.
Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING
PETER changes to a suit.
PETER (V.O.): I've got to arrive at the Convention and Exhibition Centre before 8.am.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): After retirement, I don't mind missing some early morning celebration receptions.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When it was the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, I went as I thought I had played my institutional role in shaping the present Hong Kong, China.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I happened to meet up with an old friend who quickly facilitated my joining of a set of Barristers' Chambers. I've been in private practice for nearly 4 years now.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Today is the 24th anniversary of Hong Kong's rejoining the motherland.
Act 2
INT. CONVENTION & EXHIBITION CENTRE - MORNING.
A crowded mega hall. Peter is observing PEOPLE in sight. LADY#1 is walking past several rows of tables in front of him.
PETER (V.O.): Oh, she was the Administrative Officer I worked with in the mid-2000s. There were debates in the Legislative Council concerning the protection of tobacco trademarks.
Focusing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's always easy to recognize her as her hairstyle is the 1950s' classic curls. I haven't seen her on TV for awhile.
Focusing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): She has got some silver hair...and a stomach pooch too.
Peter then sees a white-haired LADY#2, taking a seat at a table next to his.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): She's a retired Professor of Medicine. I met her a couple of times in dinner receptions hosted by a pharmaceutical industry association.
Then, Peter sees LADY#3 joining LADY#4 at that table, sharing a chair together.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The first one was a former Legislative Councillor representing the manufacturing sector. I recall I lobbied her once on voting matters.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The other was a high-flier politician since the colonial days. She was first appointed to the Executive Council. In the late 1980s, my boss in the Law Reform Commission Secretariat mentioned her name a lot.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): And then she was appointed to the Executive Council before and after 1997.
Smiling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): And then in my de facto farewell concert in 2014, she and an incumbent Executive Councillor joined me on stage to sing along!
Hearing the MC's announcement, all rise to sing the song "March of the Volunteers".
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I always think the lyrics of the last verse can be better.
Then, a VVIP on stage speaks.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In 1998, we had a private transaction. He sold his car park to me just before the property market was about to collapse. I honoured the contract as a gentleman.
We hear the VVIP referring to: ...Intellectual Property Trading...
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh! The subject is still on Government's Policy Agenda. I pioneered it in 2011 when I became Director of Intellectual Property, Hong Kong, China.
The ceremony ends.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Before the pandemic, it would be breakfast and party time.
Picking up a souvenir packet from the table, Peter leaves.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Okay, I'll go home to have breakfast with my family.
Exiting the hall, Peter sees a small Chinese orchestra performing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Let me show some support.
Having taken some photos, Peter watches those playing cellos.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My elder son used to play cello in his College orchestra.
INT. DINING ROOM - LATE MORNING
Peter's FAMILY are having breakfast, watching a video clip at the same time.
PETER'S WIFE: Our elder daughter's Tokyo apartment is quite nice.
PETER: Both the design and the view are good.
PETER'S WIFE: Next April, she can watch Sakura blossom from her balcony! I hope by then I can go there to join her.
PETER (V.O.): Me too.
