The Horizon and the Water

  2. Act 1


  3. EXT. SILVERSTRAND BAY - 16:30


  4. Golden light spills across a calm bay. The beach is quiet. PETER arrives with his swim bag. He moves with the economy of a man who has performed the same ritual a thousand times.


  5. He glances towards the beach. He sees a WOMAN, in casual wear, sitting alone on the dry sand.


  6. PETER (V.O.): It appears she has been here for a while. And she's not leaving.


  7. He notices a SWIMMER, hesitating, gasping. Peter wades in. Just a smooth entry into the cold salt.


  8. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Five years. That's what Dr Lam said.


  9. He swims breaststroke, and then freestyle.


  10. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Swimming is a lifelong fitness activity - a total body workout with minimum impact on joints.


  11. He swims towards a far corner of the swimming area.


  12. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Dr Lam remarked that my daily swim ritual should add five years to my life.


  13. Act 2


  14. EXT. FLOATING PLATFORM - LATER


  15. Round in shape. About 100 meters from shore. Peter hauls himself onto its surface.


  16. He lies back. Arms spread. His chest rises and falls. He peers at his forearm. The skin is tanned, firm for his age.

  18. PETER (V.O.): Seawater. Minerals. Magnesium. Good for my skin and immune system.


  19. He smiles slightly. Then he turns his head on the beach.


  20. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The woman hasn't moved. Still sitting. Still looking at the horizon. Every 30 seconds or so, her eyes drift to the line where sea meets sky. Then back down. Then up again.


  21. Peter watches her as the platform rocks gently.


  22. FLASHBACK


  23. EXT. GUANGDONG CAMPSITE - 15:00 (10 April 2026)


  24. Big and modern. Tents on manicured grass. A beautiful sea view. A long modern bridge in a distance.


  25. But between the campers and the water: an embankment. Peter stands at the edge, hands on his hips.


  26. PETER (V.O.): The guide says its five-star. The sunrise is spectacular.


  27. Peter takes a selfie.


  28. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But there's no sand. No way to enter the water safely.


  29. Pausing.


  30. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Actually, there's nowhere to swim.


  31. Pausing.


  32. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Quality of life isn't just about sunrise. It's about getting in.


  33. RETURN TO PRESENT


  34. Peter sits up fully. Looks back at the woman. She has drawn her knees closer to her chest.


  35. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): She's not here to swim.


  36. Pausing.


  37. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I measure life in laps and added years. The idea of sitting still on sand - watching nothing - is almost alien.


  38. But then he softens.


  39. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Maybe watching the sea is its own medicine.


  40. Peter turns his attention to the glowing digits of the clock on the shore.


  41. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Time to go.


  42. He slides off the platform into the water. He swims backstroke, and then butterflystroke, back towards shore.


  43. Peter emeges from the water. He looks up towards the dry sand. The woman is still there. Same spot. Same posture.


  44. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Her gaze fixes on the horizon as if waiting for something that never arrives.


  45. Peter walks past her.


  46. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Some people need to sit. Some people need to swim.


  47. Grabbing his swim bag, he goes to the bathroom.


  48. Later, Peter comes out of the bathroom. He takes one last look at the beach.


  49. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The woman hasn't moved. The sea hasn't changed. The horizon keeps its line.


  50. The woman doesn't watch Peter leave. She watches the sea.


  51. Peter nods. As if accepting something.


  52. Act 3


  53. INT. LIVING ROOM - 21:45


  54. Peter uploads an image to a draft on his laptop. It shows a grassy waterfront campsite with a stone path leading to the sea, and a distant bridge linking Zhong Shan and Shenzhen.


  55. PETER (V.O.): Some people spend their lives choosing between the horizon and the water. The wise ones realise the horizon is what one looks at, and the water is where one lives.


  56. Thinking.


  57. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The horizon and the water meet but never mix. That's the secret: one can spend a lifetime watching the line, or one can spend an afternoon learning to float on one side of it.


  58.  Reflecting.


  59. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The woman trusts the horizon and the water equally - one to hold her gaze, the other to hold her absence. I trust only the water. That's why she stays, and that's why I swim.
